Puerto Ayacucho, in Amazonas state, is surrounded by the Orinoco River. Something I find really crazy is that sometimes you’re walking through a community and, out of nowhere, you come to the river. This is a good thing for the townspeople because they fish year-round, although there are clearly some months that are better for fishing than others. But even though it has its drawbacks, it’s also a form of entertainment and fun for everyone who lives near the river.
For example, there are times of the year when the river recedes so much due to the intense heat that islands emerge in different parts of the river. What’s unique about these islands is that they have almost white sand, which makes them look a lot like a beach. That’s why they’re called “river beaches.” We visited Amazonas right when these islands were emerging, and for the first time, I discovered a beautiful river beach called “Playa Sardinata.”

This beach is in the same area where we were staying. Although we thought it would be close for that reason, it actually wasn’t that close—it took us at least 25 minutes to get there. When you reach the Orinoco River, there’s a boat that takes people to this island. It’s not far, so it took us about 3 minutes to cross over to Sardinata Beach. As we were crossing, the sky suddenly turned green, and we honestly thought that was going to ruin our plans, because on this island there are no trees or anything else to shelter us from the rain.
But as soon as we got to the other side, it wasn’t raining. The great thing about all this was that, since it was cloudy, there was no sun from which we desperately needed to seek shelter. Besides, precisely because the sun is so intense, we’d gone in the afternoon. For me, it was great to visit for the first time. Although I’d heard quite a bit about river beaches, I still had my doubts about whether they actually looked like a beach—but they definitely do.
The current and the water crashing against the rocks create small waves that come and go—some bigger than others—just like at the ocean. And although the water was different in temperature and color, it definitely felt like we were spending the afternoon at a beach, except that when you went in, you were surprised to find the water was fresh. Which, I have to admit, was really cool and unique.

Esta playa queda en la misma zona en la que nos estábamos quedando. Aunque por esa razón pensamos que sería cerca, la verdad es que no tanto, pues nos tomó al menos 25 minutos llegar hasta allá. Al llegar al río Orinoco, hay una embarcación que trabaja llevando a las personas a esta isla. No queda lejos, así que nos tomó aproximadamente 3 minutos cruzar a playa Sardinata. Mientras cruzábamos, el cielo se puso verde de repente y la verdad creímos que eso iba a arruinar los planes, porque en esta isla no hay árboles ni nada con qué cubrirse de la lluvia.
Pero apenas llegamos al otro lado no estaba lloviendo. Lo genial de todo esto fue que, debido a que estaba nublado, no hubo sol del cual necesitáramos desesperadamente cubrirnos. Aparte, por lo mismo de que el sol es intenso, habíamos ido ya por la tarde. Para mí fue genial llegar por primera vez. Aunque ya me habían hablado bastante de las playas de río, todavía tenía mis dudas de si en realidad se veían como una playa, pero definitivamente sí.
La corriente y el choque del agua con las piedras hace que pequeñas olas vayan y vengan, algunas más grandes que otras, tal y como ocurre en el mar. Y aunque la diferencia era la temperatura del agua y también el color de la misma, sin duda parecía que estábamos pasando la tarde en una playa, solo que al entrar te encontrabas con la sorpresa de sentir el agua dulce. Lo cual debo admitir que fue súper genial y diferente.
We had a great time at Sardinata Beach until the sun went down. I was really impressed by this place, especially the power of the Orinoco River, as I could see in the distance how the current crashed forcefully against the rocks and rushed by at full speed. In fact, the current was so strong that you had to be careful not to get swept away. We practically swam right at the shore, and even there, the water was quite deep. I can’t imagine how deep it was beyond the island.
It was undoubtedly a special place, and the fact that it isn’t there all year round—only when the water recedes—makes it even more special, as if I’d arrived at just the right moment to visit a place that sometimes doesn’t exist. I really loved the experience, and I can say that it did look like a beach—only, personally, I enjoyed it much more because of the lack of salt and that characteristic stinging sensation in my eyes.

Pasamos un buen rato en playa Sardinata hasta que cayó el sol. Me impresionó mucho este lugar, especialmente la fuerza que tiene el río Orinoco, ya que veía a lo lejos cómo la corriente pegaba con fuerza a las rocas y viajaba a toda velocidad.
