There are times when, looking back, we see ourselves on a different timeline and think things like, “What led me to make that decision?” or even, “How silly of me—I would have done it differently.” The thing is, judging our past selves from the perspective of our present selves is a bad habit that characterizes us as human beings; in any case, it seems crazy to me how change is a constant in our existence.
For example, about five years ago, I felt completely certain that at that age I was already mature enough to make certain decisions, but now I realize that the truth is, I needed to go through a lot of things before I was ready. One might think that this transition from adolescence to adulthood is the biggest change you go through in your life, but I’ve already gone through several of these stages, and I’m sure there will be others in which a major change will come into view.

I have to admit that sometimes, looking back, I miss the person I used to be a little—mostly because of those things that define us as children, like the innocence of believing that people are good and of loving everyone unconditionally. When you’re an adult and you’ve had bad experiences in life, the truth is that you become a little more reserved and find it a little harder to trust.
The thing is, none of us is immune to experiencing these kinds of things throughout our lives—and when we least expect them—because the truth is that none of us is prepared for what’s coming, since we honestly don’t know what might happen. Sometimes I laugh it off—and because, at least for me, joking about what I’ve been through is a way to heal—I often say, “This new trauma is going to help me grow so much.”

Although some people think this is a negative way of looking at life, for me it’s a realistic way of understanding that life will always bring changes, and it’s up to you how you view them. In fact, how you view them is what determines whether or not you’ll be able to cope with them, because when something is inevitable and also unpredictable, all you can do is prepare yourself mentally so that, whatever comes, however much it hurts, and whatever changes occur, it will bring with it experience—and experience can always be useful.
And thinking about all these things, I began to reflect on all the time we spend thinking about how things used to be—or even feeling sad about having left behind certain ways of seeing and feeling. But the truth is that if we focus on the bad, we’ll always end up feeling sad; on the other hand, if we focus on the good and understand that change is part of who we are and that we’ll always be exposed to it, we’ll use it as fuel to keep improving as people.
