MID-OCTOBER - (STREET PHOTOGRAPHY SERIES)

Tcats.jpg

It's already mid-October of this long 2026, a year filled with all sorts of unexpected events for all of us here in my country. But what doesn't seem to have changed much is the fog, which is becoming slower, denser, and more frequent on the streets during the mornings of this month. And today, wandering around my neighborhood before 7:00 AM, a flood of memories from my elementary and early high school years came flooding back. October was (and I think it still is) the month when classes resumed after the mid-year break, which usually started in the second half of July. I remember those years in the late 70s and early 80s when I was allowed to go to school alone, not holding my mother's hand or the hand of one of my aunts or older cousins. Back then, I liked to wake up earlier to leave the house much sooner and spend a little more time in the foggy streets. I think that ever since then there has been this kind of "visual love affair" between these streets and me, something that, as you can see, remains intact to this day...

Sometimes I would get so distracted wandering around in the fog on my way to school that, even though I left home early, I would still arrive late to class. Then my teacher (I remember one named "Dora" with special fondness) would scold me, and I, with my eyelashes and eyebrows covered in dewdrops, would reply: "Please excuse me, 'Mae' (a loving nickname for teacher), but I got very distracted looking at the foggy streets." Then she would smile a little and say things like: "Oh, Jesús Armando, you seem like you're going to be a poet or a painter when you grow up, because you have such talent..." And I would smile at my teacher's words and reply: "No, teacher, I want to be a priest!" 😁 Because until I was twelve or thirteen, I was always telling everyone that my future was to be a priest... Nothing could be further from the truth, since I ended up studying systems engineering!... But that's how kids are, they make up these things and then change their minds... Although this love for foggy streets hasn't changed for me at 55 years old...
