[Podcast] Social Media Will Drain You

I've been on chain since 2017....

And over that time, my effort for building a following has been here. And never on the web 2 stuff.

And there's a reason why...

I discuss that and much more in today's #podcast

I hope you enjoy it!

I find the Hive platforms less disquieting than others.

Your point about social media being designed to get people angry and divided stuck with me, especially since your friend's story shows how it works in practice — he followed the politics, got upset, and the feed just kept feeding it. Choosing to create only on chain since 2017, when you used to spread the same podcast across Spotify, Apple and YouTube, is a much harder version of that choice than just deleting an app.

That is the game with social media. It's all about trying to get the numbers, and the bots are there just to make people angry. You don't win anything by making an argument online, and that time is best used elsewhere.

Social media algorithms feed us exactly what we crave. If we have an appetite for politics and lean toward a particular political side, the algorithm will serve us more of that. Conversely, if you use social media to look for videos or news about, say, workout tips, your feed will soon be filled with similar content.

To reshape an algorithm that has already become set in a certain way, you can intentionally search for topics outside of what it typically serves you, or simply clear your history and cache.

For months now, I’ve limited my use of mainstream social media; instead, I spend most of my time on Hive, occasionally reading articles on platforms like Medium or Substack.

  • Yes, I came to that conclusion years ago watching Social media comment devolve into flame war, and threats doing the ALL CAPS thing seasoned with ill used punctuation. No agree to not agree. All designed to divide everyone. Will proper discourse ever come back. As you said, rather than become mental train wrecks we should make an effort to be positive when we are online, the internet isn't the only place to be because there's still a whole world out there. Even when I'm digging around mt garden, people still stop to chat.

  • I think social media has changed the way we communicate, but not always for the better, particularly when we come together in real life.
