Wednesday Walk

A shortcut between the marble and the silence [EN/ES]

English Version

When walking on foot 👣, one of the fastest ways to get from one place to another, besides quickening the pace, is “cutting the way,” that’s how we say it in my country. It is about taking a shortcut. On this occasion I was heading to my friend @lileisabel’s house and the shortest route from where I was to her house was crossing the Colón Cemetery, in Vedado.

This is a very well-known cemetery, heritage of the country and the largest in Cuba. It is not only a site destined for eternal rest, it is also very appreciated for the great funerary art it holds, with sculptures and marble monuments of a quality recognized worldwide. It is a place I have walked through on many occasions, always with the fortune that it has been only to shorten the route.

The first times I entered a little impressed, by the number of headstones, tombs and mausoleums that are seen everywhere. However, with time I began to see it as something natural. Death is part of life and is only a cycle, so I no longer feel the fear that accompanied me before. Today I focus more on appreciating the beauty and serenity of the place. The marble monuments, many of them true works of art and which are among the things that most impress when being here.

In the midst of so much funerary architecture, the cemetery church stands out in the center, a simple temple rises with sobriety and elegance, a space that complements the peace of the surroundings, as if everything were designed to remind us of the importance of stillness and calm.

Walking through the Colón Cemetery is not only crossing a shortcut, it is also going through a place full of history and art, since here are buried the most relevant figures of Cuba. It is a different site, and the peace that is breathed among its avenues and monuments turns the journey into something more than a simple path.

Lindo post amiga 😍
