Urban Landscape [EN/ES]

English Version

Walking around the surroundings of Avenida Boyeros I head towards the vicinity of the monument that is located in the Plaza de la Revolución, in the neighborhood of Nuevo Vedado, Havana. Something that characterizes this route are the wide avenues and the large buildings that rise on both sides. They are constructions of compact architecture, mostly ministries and state offices, with a sober and functional design that reflects the period in which they were built. The avenue has the peculiarity, uncommon in other areas of the city, of being very well paved and without potholes, since it is the main road that leads directly to the buildings where the Council of State and other ministries of great importance are located.

In the distance the Monument to José Martí can be distinguished, with its lookout tower that rises to great height above sea level. It is one of the highest points of the city and a symbol that is recognized from different angles of Havana. As I advance, the tower grows larger and dominates the landscape, becoming a visual and emotional reference for those who pass through this area. The surroundings are surrounded by vegetation, and among it stand out the royal palms, national tree and symbol of Cuba, which rise as tall as the buildings that accompany them.

The street at this moment is quite deserted, perhaps because of the rain clouds that threaten to fall and that are becoming darker. However, the landscape retains its appeal, what at another time would be a bright and clear day under the rays of the sun, now transforms into a different setting, with an atmosphere loaded with humidity and expectation. That duality between the everyday and the monumental makes the place have a special attraction.

An interesting fact about the Plaza de la Revolución is that it occupies more than 70 thousand square meters, which makes it one of the largest squares in the world. Around it are emblematic buildings such as the Ministry of the Interior, whose façade displays the famous mural of Che Guevara with the phrase “Hasta la victoria siempre”, and the Ministry of Communications, adorned with the image of Camilo Cienfuegos, national heroes. These murals have become visual icons of the city that attract both visitors and photographers who seek to capture the political and cultural essence of Cuba.

Walking through these avenues and reaching the Plaza de la Revolución is more than a simple urban journey, it is coming into contact with the history of the country. Here the symbolic strength of the monuments, the natural beauty of the palms that guard the surroundings, and the panoramic view of the landscape are mixed. A solemn and beautiful site.
