Celebrando a Janis Joplin (Esp- Eng)

Down On Me

Piece of My Heart

Cry Baby

Celebrating Janis Joplin

Fifty-six years ago (October 4, 1970), one of the most valuable and unique singers of the 20th century in rock and blues passed away: Janis Joplin.

Since I'm from that era, I lived through and enjoyed all the greats of rock, including Janis Joplin, whom I listened to, followed, and appreciated (and continue to appreciate deeply). I listened to Janis Joplin with passion on LPs and CDs; today, thanks to advances in digital technology, we can watch videos of her performances on YouTube and listen to her songs on platforms like Spotify.

Joplin, who died at the age of 27, supposedly by suicide, was one of the undisputed greats. What caused her early self-inflicted death will remain, like many others, a question, an uncertainty.

Her foray into blues was one of the most significant characteristics of her musical output, naturally combined with the rhythms of 20th-century rock and pop.

Four years ago, I paid tribute to her on this platform with a microfiction piece, which, if you're interested, you can find at this link: link.

This time, I decided to remember her by sharing three of her most famous and beloved songs, which I've included below:

A brief comment: Janis Joplin's raw (and perhaps heartbreaking), sometimes sorrowful, but always vibrant voice shines through in songs like these. There must have been a very close connection between her life and her songs (some are covers of other artists' original compositions). Although I haven't mentioned it before, we know about her "unhappy" teenage life, her disappointing romantic experiences, and her addiction to alcohol and hard drugs like heroin. All of these traits point to an intense and tragic life that ended tragically. Sometimes I think of her and compare her to the equally tragic Marilyn Monroe, because of the sense of unfulfilled dreams and dissatisfaction in their lives. Musically, her style and lifestyle inevitably bring to mind Jim Morrison and Jimi Hendrix, and more recently, Amy Winehouse.

It reminded me, while you were mentioning addictions and chaotic teenage life to the max, of Amy Winehouse. I watched Marilyn's (documentary/movie), and it slightly reminded me of her because I think that, despite everything, she believed in love, got to know it, and had it reciprocated

I will listen to the song because I know the artist's name, but I don't remember ever focusing on listening to her. Maybe I’ve heard some song throughout my life, but I don't know.

It's pleasant to read recommendations from that era because I like that period both in cinema and music. I think the best artists are those who, in a way, had difficult lives that made them mature and, at the same time, perish very early.
