Situated in a strategic location—its heights commanding views over the plains of both Almazán and Gómara—the village of Moñux slumbers peacefully. It remains anchored in a resilient indifference, watching time pass with that indomitable Borgesian attitude that turns yesterday into today and into the "still-to-come."
Although the imposing tower of its ruined castle draws the eye from afar, few travelers crossing these melancholy, lonely expanses—marked by a landscape that seems to perpetually summon the blizzards of nearby Moncayo—actually turn aside from their path. They rarely yield to that same impulse which, according to folklore, killed the cat: curiosity.
Yet, while Moñux may not stand out for legends and mysterious tales—unlike other villages in the area—it does distinguish itself through historical reality. One significant episode unfolded years after the suppression of the Knights Templar and involves a former Templar—or, to borrow Antonio Machado’s description of the famous Andalusian knight Don Guido ("a thunderbolt clad as a Nazarene"), a man named Bertrand Du Guesclin. After his time as a Templar, he became a mercenary serving—among others—Henry of Trastámara during the fratricidal war against his half-brother, Peter I "the Cruel," whose army captured this imposing tower. It is a tower that not only occupied a strategic position on the Duero frontier—as noted earlier—but also withstood repeated lightning strikes, remaining standing to this day. It stands as a relic of a past that the superstitious locals have always associated with the Devil.
Situado en un lugar estratégico, desde cuyas alturas se dominan tanto los campos de Almazán como los de Gómara, un pueblo, de nombre Moñux, duerme plácidamente el sueño de los justos, anclados en una resiliente indiferencia que ve el tiempo pasar con esa indomable actitud borgiana, que hace del ayer el hoy y también el todavía.
A pesar de que la imponente torre de su desmembrado castillo atrae la mirada en la distancia, realmente son pocos los viajeros, que, atravesando estas melancólicas soledades, marcadas por una tierra que parece estar reclamando siempre las ventiscas del cercano Moncayo, se desvían unos minutos de su camino, motivados por ese mismo efecto, que, según las tradiciones populares, también mató al gato: la curiosidad.
Pero si Moñux es un pueblo que no sobresale, precisamente como otros de su entorno, en el tema de leyendas y anécdotas misteriosas, sí lo hace, no obstante, las apariencias, en realidades históricas. Una de las más importantes, se desarrolló algunos años después de la supresión de la Orden del Temple y está relacionada con un antiguo templario. O como diría Antonio Machado refiriéndose al famoso caballero andaluz, Don Guido, un trueno vestido de Nazareno, de nombre Bertrand Du Guesclin. Después de su oficio de templario, se convirtió en mercenario al servicio, entre otros señores, de Enrique de Trastámara y su fratricida guerra contra su hermanastro, Pedro I el Cruel, quien tomó con su ejército esta imponente torre. Una torre, que no sólo formó parte de uno de los lugares más estratégicos de la frontera del Duero, como aventurábamos al principio, sino que, además, fue hendida numerosas veces por el rayo y todavía permanece enhiesta. Como esos antiguos restos de un pasado al que los supersticiosos habitantes siempre han relacionado con el Diablo.
