"If anyone can hear this, do not come looking for us."

If anyone can hear this, do not come looking for us. The walls collapsed, the ground gave way, and the abyss opened up beneath our feet. Our lives vanished in less than a second. We are no longer here. A minute ago, I had so many dreams; I had goals to achieve, trips to take, and hugs to give. But nature—which asks no permission, nor has any need to—shifted violently, and we, like mere ants trampled by a human shoe, ceased to exist. Along with our lives, our hopes vanished—mere bodies and souls that ceased to be.
Do not come looking for us; we are gone, we no longer exist, we no longer are. We have become part of the dust that returns to the earth; our atoms are dissolving into eternal silence.
Dedicated to the more than 5,609 confirmed dead and the hundreds of missing persons—whose status the government refuses to acknowledge—following the double earthquake in Venezuela on June 24, 2026.
Today, three months after that fateful disaster, I dedicate this poem by the Italian Romantic poet Giacomo Leopardi to the many for whom no one came searching, and whose dreams were buried.
The Infinite
This lonely hill was always dear to me,
and this hedge that hides so much
of the farthest horizon.
But as I sit and gaze,
I glimpse in my mind endless spaces beyond it,
and superhuman silences,
and a stillness so profound
that my heart all but tears itself apart with fear. And hearing the wind rustling through these trees,
I compare that infinite silence to this voice:
and I remember the eternal, and the dead seasons,
and the present, living one,
and her voice.
Thus,
amidst this vastness,
my thought is drowned:
and the shipwreck is sweet to me in this sea.*
I know that infinity awaits us; I only lament that, for so many, life slipped away so tragically, so recently, and so unexpectedly. As a mother, I feel this deep pain, and I am sharing it here with you all. The double earthquake has faded from the headlines, yet today many people remain there—unsearched for, unattended, unprotected, without family, and heartbroken. I pray for them and hope they can go on with their lives; if I could do anything more than pray, I would.

https://ecency.com/@ecency-star/writing-contest-finish-the-tale-2a85753545f05
