The episode begins with Oshio confessing his feelings to Sato over the phone, and Sato, unable to bear the embarrassment of the situation, drops her phone into the bathtub, causing the call to suddenly cut off. Because of this, Oshio assumes that Sato has rejected him since she didn’t respond to his confession. I find Oshio’s reaction to the call being cut off to be really pathetic—he always jumps to extremes way too quickly. Without thinking things through, he assumes Sato rejected him and no longer wants anything to do with him. Seriously, Oshio is an over-the-top guy—on a god-tier level.
Then we see that as Oshio walks to school with his best friend, Rinka (Sato’s younger cousin) appears. She thanks him for preventing the accident the night before and, on top of that, asks for his phone number. Rinka is totally cold toward Oshio’s friend, but with him, it’s clear that she’s completely in love. The only one who doesn’t realize this is Oshio himself—seriously, this guy is either clueless or blind, but honestly, they couldn’t have made a character any dumber than this. I get the joke that guys don’t pick up on hints, but this isn’t even a hint.
Then we get to the main part of the episode, where Sato’s dad has taken her phone away and calls Oshio to ask him to cancel the date he’d planned with Sato. Sato’s dad tells Oshio that he’s taken his daughter’s phone away and that he’s disappointed in him for teaching her how to use social media and take photos. Plus, he already knows what Oshio’s intentions are toward Sato, since he’s read the messages where Oshio confessed his feelings to her. Seriously, what kind of dad would be disappointed that someone taught his kids how to use social media? I get that social media can be a distraction, but I don’t see any reason to act so drastically—this is the anime where everyone is over-the-top.
This leads Oshio to meet with his beloved’s dad to try to persuade him to give the phone back and accept that the two of them are friends—or maybe even a couple. I don’t think either of them realizes they’re already a couple, but whatever. The truth is, the way Oshio handles the situation with Sato’s dad is really good—he’s polite but also firm, and he speaks clearly and directly to Sato’s dad. That’s something I would never have done at his age—going to talk to the dad of a girl I liked and speaking to him so clearly and directly would have killed me with embarrassment, and I’m sure the words wouldn’t have come out right.
Oshio, on the other hand, manages to convince the man, who agrees to return the cell phone to Sato and let the two young people date—seriously, do these two even know they’re a couple? I have my doubts—and asks him to take Sato home while he takes care of an unexpected issue that came up. Oh, and by the way, after witnessing the whole situation, Rinka realizes she doesn’t stand a chance with Oshio because he’s blindly in love with Sato.
It’s perhaps the very polite and skillful way Oshio handled the situation that’s why the episode has such a high rating, because honestly, I don’t see anything else that was quite so spectacular. A hug for everyone—come on over, let me give you a hug. Bye.
