Hello, everyone. I hope you are all having an excellent day—blessings to you all.
Today, I wanted to talk about the fact that in my country, October 30th marks the Day of Autonomy for the Caribbean Coast regions. I believe this is an important date for bridging the cultures of the Caribbean Coast and the Pacific region; yet, even today, it often feels distant to many, and some people even view the Caribbean Coast as something separate from themselves.
This date is commemorated today because it marks the approval of the Caribbean Coast Autonomy Law—a piece of legislation designed to recognize and guarantee respect for the autonomy and self-determination of the various peoples and ethnic groups that inhabit the Caribbean Coast.
It is worth noting that the Caribbean Coast is home to many indigenous peoples, ethnic groups, and communities, each with its own distinct language, heritage, and dialect. I believe it is essential to have a day like today—a day to celebrate and show respect for these groups. The cultural richness of the Caribbean Coast is vast; as I mentioned, it is home to a wide array of ethnic groups and peoples, and their heritage also incorporates influences from other cultures. This unique blend creates a cultural richness that is truly one-of-a-kind.
I have visited the Caribbean Coast a few times, and I have been absolutely amazed. To begin with, it is a natural paradise, boasting many pristine, unexplored beaches that are simply beautiful. But the best part of all is the people—they are wonderful, kind, and hardworking individuals who are striving to get ahead in life. I still have yet to visit on a day when they are holding a celebration; I am certain I will be amazed by what I see. As I mentioned, it is truly unique—their celebrations, their dances, and their culture are so rich. While it differs somewhat from what we see in the Pacific region, it is, without a doubt, something wonderful.
Returning to the significance of today’s observance: this day is rooted in the principle of respecting the culture and identity of the Caribbean Coast. There is no such thing as a "superior" or "inferior" culture, nor a "superior" or "inferior" language. All the cultures, peoples, races, dialects, and ethnic groups that coexist within our national territory enrich and add value to what we call our homeland.
Incidentally, while today’s celebration takes place on the Caribbean Coast of Nicaragua, it is not limited to that country alone; rather, it honors the entire, rich culture of the Caribbean peoples.
Best wishes to everyone.
