The main idea of this book might seem quite simple, but the author uses numerous examples throughout the book to show that it is much more complex than it appears at first glance—and that it is highly relevant in today’s world.
The idea is that we humans move forward when we believe we can change our future, when we believe that our actions will have value and that through them we’ll be able to create what we want.
This is what the author repeats many times in the book—the term “Agency.” The original language in which I’m writing this is Spanish, but I read the book in English, and seeing the word “Agency” so many times—with a direct translation of “Agencia”—I didn’t quite understand at first what the author meant. But then I realized that he refers to “Agency” as the ability to shape the future we want through our actions.
And don’t go thinking this is a self-help or motivational book; Seligman, in this book, doesn’t set out to motivate you—he goes much further than that. He wants to show that the history of humanity has been shaped by individuals or groups of people who believed they could do something to change reality, to intervene in the present in order to change the future. That is where the progress of societies begins.
The author also tells us directly that “Agency” is the mindset that drives us as individuals to make good use of our resources, to get the most out of them, and to actively put them to use—rather than simply having them there without doing anything with them.
The author tells us that the key elements of “Agency” are Efficacy, Optimism, and Imagination. These are the fundamental building blocks of “Agency,” and they must all be in harmony; you cannot have “Agency” if you lack any one of the three.
Efficacy: This is the idea that our actions have an impact on our lives—the belief that you can achieve a goal in the here and now if you take action. It’s the idea that if you do “X,” you can get “Y.” Simple yet interesting, as the author uses examples to show that some people lose the mindset that they can achieve their goals; there are those who may come to believe that their actions will have no impact and therefore they won’t be able to change their situation.
Optimism: Related to efficacy, but here the idea is that you can achieve your goals in the future—it’s the belief that the future can be better than the present. Imagine someone who is absolutely convinced that the future will be worse or that nothing will change—why bother trying, then? It’s the idea that, even in the distant future, you can achieve your goals.
Imagination: And perhaps the one I like best, since it implies that to build the future you want, you first have to imagine it; to reach that goal you want, you first have to picture it. You can’t start building something if you haven’t imagined it first; you can’t put your effort into the life you want if you haven’t yet imagined it.
This is how “Agency” drives progress—through these three interconnected keys. Without one of them, the others cannot function in harmony. Effectiveness without optimism, and optimism without imagination, cannot work, and the author provides examples of how these three must go hand in hand for everything to flow smoothly.
I find “Agency” to be an extremely interesting book, because, as I said, it’s not a self-help book, nor does it tell you how to achieve your goals; the author is much more ambitious and shows us examples of how, at different times in human history, advancement and progress were achieved by people who possessed that “Agency.”
This book is undoubtedly worth reading; I think you can learn a lot from it. It’s a very engaging read that you’ll thoroughly enjoy.
Best regards and warm regards.
