The story follows Sasaki, an office worker at a company that exploits him to the point where he’s constantly exhausted and lives only to work for the company and its terrible boss. In the little free time he has, he spends it admiring a beautiful supermarket cashier, to whom he lacks the courage to confess his feelings.
Tayama and Yamada are the supermarket cashiers with whom Sasaki is hopelessly in love. The girl has a split personality, and Sasaki is unable to recognize that they are the same person. Tayama has a free-spirited, somewhat daring personality—she’s an open and free-spirited girl; Yamada’s (the cashier’s) personality, on the other hand, is reserved, quiet, and modest, which makes it impossible for Sasaki, a man in his forties, to realize that they are both the same person.
So Sasaki goes to the supermarket every night after his long workday, just so Yamada can serve him with that beautiful smile that makes Sasaki forget just how bad his life and job are. One night, a beautiful young woman in her 20s invites him to smoke behind the supermarket. Tayama begins spending her nights with Sasaki, smoking and keeping each other company. Surprised by how clueless Sasaki is about the fact that she and Yamada are the same person, Tayama often sets up “tests” to gauge Sasaki’s character.
Sasaki, who has a nervous and extremely shy personality, is the target of comments, actions, and—as I mentioned earlier—the “tests” Tayama sets for him. She makes sarcastic remarks about Sasaki’s age, his personality, and the labor exploitation he’s a victim of; Sasaki, for her part, is always blaming herself for her personality, always thinking negatively—worrying that because she’s young, Tayama will hate her for being old—or even measuring her words to the extreme so as not to upset Tayama or seem out of place next to the young sister by her side.
However, as they spend time together, Tayama begins to see Sasaki’s true character; she sees what a good person he is, how empathetic he is toward others, how attentive and considerate he is, and his ability to make her see and think about things she herself would never have considered if it weren’t for Sasaki. As a result, Tayama begins to develop a fondness for the poor, exploited old man.
In fact, their paths had already crossed years ago, when Yamada was a young, inexperienced cashier just starting her job at the supermarket and was the target of comments from difficult customers who singled her out and complained about the service she provided, On one of the many occasions when a particular customer yelled at Yamada, a man came to the young cashier’s defense and politely but firmly confronted the angry customer, letting him know that he shouldn’t yell at the cashier.
That situation and the words that a young Sasaki spoke to an even younger Yamada left a lasting impression on her and motivated her to improve at her job.
And so, Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You is the story of two people brought together by smoking at night behind a supermarket; they connect their lives in this way and grow closer with each passing night. Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You es lo que muchos consideran un anime de romance adulto, pues sus protagonistas no son los típicos adolescentes en secundaria, ni tampoco está llena de las situaciones clichés que se esperan en este tipo de anime de romance.
La historia sigue a Sasaki un oficinista que trabaja en una empresa que lo explota hasta el punto que vive cansado y solo vive para trabajar en la empresa y el terrible jefe que tiene y que el poco tiempo que tiene, lo usa admirando una guapa cajera del supermercado, a quien no tiene el valor de declararle sus sentimientos.
Tayama y Yamada, es la cajera del supermercado de la que Sasaki está perdidamente enamorado. La chica usa una doble personalidad la cual Sasaki es incapaz de reconocer que son la misma chica. Tayama tiene una personalidad libre un algo atrevida es una chica abierta y libre; la personalidad de Yamada (la cajera) es reservada, quieta, modesta, lo cual hace que el cuarentón de Sasaki imposible de reconocer que ambas son la misma chica.
Asi pues Sasaki va al supermercado todas las noches luego de su larga jornada de trabajo, solo para que Yamada lo atienda con esa hermosa sonrisa que hace que Sasaki olvide todo lo malo que es su vida y su trabajo. Una noche una hermosa joven de unos 20 años lo invita a fumar detrás del supermercado, Tayama empieza a pasar las noches con Sasaki fumando y haciéndose compañía. Tamaya sorprendida por lo incapaz de que es Sasaki de reconocer que tanto ella como Yamada son la misma persona, suele poner algunas "pruebas" para conocer el carácter de Sasaki.
Sasaki quien tiene una personalidad nerviosa y extremadamente timida, es víctima de los comentarios, de las acciones y como dije antes de las "pruebas" que Tayama le pone, ella hace comentarios sarcásticos de la edad de Sasaki, de su personalidad, de la explotación laboral de la cual es víctima; Sasaki por su lado siempre está echándose la culpa de su personalidad, siempre pensado negativo, de que está joven lo va a odiar por ser viejo o incluso midiendo al extremo sus palabras para no hacer enojar o para no verse fuera de lugar con la hermana joven que tiene a su lado.
No obstante,y por compartir tiempo juntos Tayama empieza a ver el carácter de Sasaki, ella ve lo buena persona que es, de la empático que es con los demás, de lo atento y considerado que es, y de la capacidad de hacerla ver y pensar en cosas a las que ella misma no hubiese pensado si no hubiese sido por Sasaki, por lo que Tayama empieza a tenerle aprecio al pobre viejo explotado.
De hecho las vidas de los dos ya se habían cruzado hace años, cuando Yamada era una joven cajera inexperta que apenas empezaba su trabajo en el supermercado y era víctima de los comentarios de malos clientes que la buscaban y se quejaban del servicio que Yamada proveía, en una de las tantas ocasiones que un cliente en específico le gritaba a Yamada, un hombre salió en defensa de la joven cajera y encaró de forma educada pero firme al molesto cliente, haciéndole saber que no debía gritarle a la cajera.
Ese situación y las palabras que un joven Sasaki le dijo a una incluso más joven Yamada la marcaron e hicieron que mejorara en su trabajo.
Y así pues Smoking Behind the Supermarket With You es la historia de dos personas que los une el fumar por las noches detrás de un supermercado, ambos conectan sus vidas de esta forma y van apegándose cada noche más.
