Under the Moonlight Where Love Turns into Pain

What are you willing to do for the person you love? To be by their side, to spend time with them, to let nothing else in the world matter—even to be willing to die in the arms of your beloved. Is that what love is?

In this chapter, we saw how both main characters break down emotionally—but for different reasons. While Sakoto breaks down because she can no longer bear the burden of a lie she knows is hurting Shinpei, he, for his part, breaks down upon hearing the truth—a truth I believe he knew deep down all along but had been trying to deny. Sakoto doesn’t love him; she’s just afraid of him and has used him to survive in an environment that literally wants her dead.

The scene where Sakoto and Shinpei are locked in a shed at night was one of the most emotionally charged moments because of everything that has happened. So much has happened that it’s fitting they’re there, but it wasn’t what Shinpei wanted. Shinpei even gave in to his impulses in front of Sakoto, drawing his sword and pointing it at her. But this time, Sakoto didn’t have time to be afraid; her noble heart couldn’t bring itself to think she might die there—rather, I think she was willing to die just to tell the whole truth. She chose to free herself from a burden she’d been carrying on her shoulders all this time.

The chapter is titled “Pain”—a pain that both of them have felt, though, as I said, for different reasons and to varying degrees. On the one hand, Sakoto suffers from being surrounded by courtesans in a brothel who hate her and try to sabotage every plan she has. On the other hand, Shinpei experiences the “pain” of rejection, the pain of the truth, and the pain of heartbreak. For someone who has never opened up, being rejected can’t be easy. In fact, Shinpei himself goes on to describe what happened to other women who rejected him in the past.

I find it poetic to see how the elements come together once again to create an intimate space between Sakoto and Shinpei. Once again, we see them in a space closed off to everyone else, bathed in moonlight—this time, the only thing missing was the fireflies. But the contrast is undeniable: while on other occasions these elements were symbols of romance and hope, this time they served to lay the groundwork for the protagonists’ heartbreak. Although one thing we see again is Sakoto “moving forward” every time she’s in the moonlight.

This time, Sakoto moves forward and breaks free from her dependence on Shinpei. She doesn’t know what might happen, but she decides to take the plunge—she takes a risk even while fully aware of the situation she’s in. But it’s that moon that helps Sakoto mature as a person. As I’ve said in past episodes, the romance between Sakoto and Shinpei is a dark one—one that shouldn’t be idealized, given how troubled it is. However, this anime is very good. With nothing more to add, I’ll say goodbye for now—until another time.
