Frozen II is a 2019 animated fantasy musical directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee, with Jennifer Lee writing the screenplay. The movie brings back Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad, and Jonathan Groff as Anna, Elsa, Olaf, and Kristoff. This time, Elsa starts hearing a mysterious voice calling her toward an enchanted forest, leading her and her friends on a journey to learn more about the past and the source of her powers.
My Take
After rewatching Frozen, I planned to rewatch Frozen II with my wife, and as soon as I started, everything came back into my memory. Sequels can sometimes feel like they are simply trying to repeat the first movie, but this one went in a different direction. It felt bigger, more adventurous, and more focused on the history of the characters.
One thing I really liked was the atmosphere. The first Frozen had a lot of snow and ice, while this movie introduced forests, rivers, autumn colors, and different kinds of magical elements. The change in setting made the movie feel fresh while still keeping the same Disney feeling.
In the first movie, Elsa was mainly trying to understand and control her powers. Here, she already seemed more confident, but she had new questions about herself and where her powers came from.
Anna was also enjoyable because she remained very protective of Elsa. She sometimes became worried when Elsa started following her own path, but that came from how much she cared about her sister. Their relationship continued to be one of the strongest parts of the movie.
I also enjoyed Olaf, as usual. His innocent way of looking at serious situations gave the movie some much-needed comedy. Kristoff had more attention this time as well, and his attempts to express his feelings created some funny moments.
The music was another big part of the experience. "Into the Unknown" was obviously the song I like the most in this movie, but I also enjoyed "Show Yourself", "Lost in the Woods," and "Some Things Never Change". Each song had a different mood, which worked well with the characters.

Idina Menzel once again gave Elsa a powerful vocal performance. Elsa had more confidence than she did in the first movie, but there was still a sense that she was searching for something. Menzel's singing worked especially well during the more emotional songs.

Kristen Bell continued to make Anna feel energetic and lovable. Anna was still a little impulsive, but she was also very determined when it came to protecting the people she loved. Bell's voice performance kept that personality consistent throughout the movie.

Josh Gad remained one of the funniest parts of the movie as Olaf. His jokes were simple, but they fit his character perfectly. His song about how things change was also a surprisingly thoughtful moment for such a funny character.

Jonathan Groff got more opportunities to show Kristoff's personality this time. His big musical moment, "Lost in the Woods", was completely different from the usual Disney musical style and became one of the biggest surprises in the movie.
The animation was another major highlight. The enchanted forest looked beautiful, and the movie had much more variety in its environments than the first film. The water and elemental magic also gave the animators plenty of interesting things to work with.
I also liked how nature became a bigger part of the movie. Fire, water, wind, and earth gave the world a different kind of magical feeling and made the adventure feel larger without losing the focus on the characters.
Conclusion
Frozen II was a bigger and more adventurous follow-up to Frozen while still keeping the relationship between Anna and Elsa at the center. I liked the new environments, the magical elements, and the extra attention given to characters like Kristoff and Olaf.
The songs were memorable, the animation looked beautiful, and the movie interestingly expanded the world. It did not have the same feeling as the first movie, but it still had plenty of heart, humor, adventure, and family moments that made it enjoyable to watch.
And I just found out that there'll be a third installment of Frozen, yeah, Frozen III. It's expected to be released on Nov 24, 2027. It's great that Disney decided to take Elsa, Anna, Kristoff, and Olaf on another journey, and I can't wait to watch it.
