Hello Hive Fam! Most especially to my ever-supportive Hive PH Community and my co Filipino Hivers, I hope you’re all doing well today. It always feels good to share little stories that remind us of our culture and the kindness that surrounds us.
Yesterday, I received a bowl of ginisang monggo from my generous neighbor. She has this lovely habit of cooking monggo every Friday; perhaps inspired by the popular Filipino tradition we fondly call “Monggo Friday.”
For many of us, monggo is more than just a dish. It’s comfort food that brings back memories of family meals, rainy afternoons, and the simple joys of sharing. The earthy taste of mung beans, paired with malunggay leaves and sometimes pork or fish, makes it hearty and nourishing.
What made this bowl extra special was not just the flavor, but the thoughtfulness behind it. My neighbor’s consistency in cooking monggo every Friday feels like her way of keeping the tradition alive, while also spreading warmth to those around her. Receiving that bowl reminded me of how food can connect us, strengthen bonds, and reflect the generosity that Filipinos are known for.
Indeed, Monggo Friday is more than a meal. It’s a cultural rhythm, a weekly reminder of simplicity, gratitude, and community spirit.
