On the Pacific Flyway for SMAP 292

The magnificent Beaver Lake is an urban oasis for vegetation and wildlife that include several bird species, though I mainly see ducks and flighty sparrows. The type of species that you encounter does vary from season to season, given that it is on the migration path of birds flying north to south as winter approaches. This particular path has been named the Pacific Flyway and encompasses the migration route between Alaska and Patagonia.

During my visit this early fall, two mallard ducks were slapping each other around over some dispute. After a splashy back and forth, one of the ducks swam away. His opponent chased him across the lake and more wet feathery mayhem ensued. I was so mesmerized by the avian drama that I didn’t have time to take a picture before one of the ducks decided he’d had enough slapping for the day and flew off.

A stoic Great Blue Heron watched the duck drama while standing still. It was likely amused. Once the quarrelsome birds moved on, the heron simply continued its hunting.

I chose this photo as the #smap entry because I found it interesting how a female duck swam close to the heron without fear. The heron has a wicked bill, but it seems they're gentle giants. At least these two appeared to be on friendly terms.

You can see how how far the duck swam to get close to heron. Then, she coyly swam away and left the large observant bird to its own devices.

The lake is subject to conservation efforts such as removal of invasive species like water lilies that used to create floating islands of vegetation, which covered a large portion of the surface and affected water quality as well as quantity. A fish ladder has been installed to allow trout and salmon to move along the creek to the lake from the nearby ocean. Native tree species have been planted, and the adjoining bog has undergone restoration work. This makes the lake a great environment for birds and other animals to hang out and get a few snacks.

Viewing wooden platforms have also been placed around the shore, so you can get a more intimate look of the lake environment.

As you can see, humans are not the only ones who enjoy a good view, and this little guy, a sparrow I believe, took the opportunity to hang out with the curious humans. Hey, you never know when those friendly humans will have a snack to share.

It is interesting to observe the avian drama, better than a TV drama I belive. The efforts that were put for the conservation deserve admiration. 17559304511477972137756406642354.gif

Great photos! That is a good-sized heron. I wonder if the duck was hoping for a snack from the heron.

Beaver Lake sounds like a proper birding paradise — great flyway coverage. 🐝🦅

What I liked most was all the effort that has been put into maintaining the site, preserving it and helping to ensure the environment is suitable for the migratory bird species. The place looks absolutely stunning, and now in autumn it’s even more beautiful with all those lovely colours. It’s incredible to be able to witness that interplay between the birds, even if you weren’t able to take any photos, but that blue heron takes the prize, it knows how to get on with the ducks and they aren’t afraid of it. The photo you’ve chosen is marvellous. Thank you so much and a big hug!🤗
