Pattern Recognition

Park Trail Oceanside31.jpg

Slugs are not the most charismatic of creatures, and we have a variety of them around these parts. You can find them on trails when the conditions are cool and moist, particularly in the fall and spring. I can only identify black slugs and banana slugs because of their extreme coloration- black and yellow. So, I was flummoxed when I came across this olive looking slug on a hike the other day, and I had no idea what kind it was. I handed it to ChatGPT and asked it to identify it then to create a diagrammatic explanation of its reasoning using the same image enhanced with augmented reality aesthetics.

I was surprised that it said black slug because of the greenish coloration, but as it mentions on the image, they can be olive when young. It's confidence was 98%. I don't know if this number is an accurate measurement or just artistic flair.

Google Lens also does a good job of identifying plants and animals. So, I used it to analyze the image, and it told me that the creature was likely a banana slug. 🤔

I could dig deeper into this topic, but I think my interest in the subject has been exhausted, and I'm also feeling a little sluggish today, so until next time. Stay slimy, my friends.

That’s interesting – the information he gave you, which fills in the missing bit… where he used to live, there were loads of slugs and nobody wanted them😆
