Magic teams has been the meta in the Frontier mode. For this reason, Water splinter is the most used with the archon giving a magic attack buff to units. They're not easy to counter given the limited number of units in the Frontier mode. However, with the coming of Arena Vanguards, the meta has changed and an effective way to counter magic teams has emerged.
The Arena Vanguard Cards
Two Arena Vanguard cards have good defenses against magic and the good thing is that they can be used together in combo. These are Jolius Blast and Buns the Unseen.
Jolius Blast
Jolius Blast by @iblast is the best tank in the Frontier and can also cross over to other modes like Modern. At level two, he's already strong dealing three melee damage, has twelve health and three speed. He has a natural defense against magic with his Void ability making him an anti magic tank. Further, his Enrage ability increases his speed to six and attack to five. This boost not only increases his power but gives him defense against physical attacks as his dodge chance increases. My Jolius is only at level two and when he gets to level four he will gain Retaliate, increasing his offensive capability.
Buns the Unseen
Buns the Unseen is the perfect off tank and combo to Jolius because of his Reach ability. He deals decent two melee damage and has three speed. His eight armor stat gives him good defense against physical attacks and his Void Armor ability allows him to use his armor as a defense against magic attacks. My Buns is at level two and at level four he gains Silence, which enables him to debuff magic units.
Featured Battle
Here is the Arena Vanguard duo against a typical magic team in the Frontier. Note that my damage dealers in the rear were all range units. Agniavan Salamader is particularly important when the enemy uses a Taunt unit because of the Burst damage that can affect the enemy's other units like in this battle. Jolius was effective
