Lumen: Bringing Meritum Tokens and a New Creator Economy to Hive

lumen-link-card-FIXED.png

Ive been quiet for a few months related to work being done in and around Magi but this time I have a major announcement to share with you guys. The launch of the first social media site utilizing Magi smart contracts. Lumen brings a fundamentally different creator economy to Hive: users don't just have followers, they have holders.

https://lumensocial.net

Lumen, put simply is a Hive frontend. Thats the boring way to say it.

The honest way: Lumen is me taking the three things that have been strangling this chain for years and building the fix instead of writing another post complaining about them. Lumen was also a challenge I set for myself. I asked the question:

Can a non-developer like myself, using just Claude, spending only $200-$300 USD, build a Hive frontend with more meaningful features than the frontends the DHF has spent close to $2 million USD on over last couple of years.

I believe I have managed to achieve that. Lumen is not perfect, it is still rough around the edges, and will require more work, feedback will be what drives further adjustments.

Lite accounts. Sign in with Google, Bitcoin or Ethereum wallets.

Screenshot (2380).png

On Lumen you pick a name and youre in. Once you are ready you make a full Hive account. Maybe you dont even care about writing, or blogging, then you dont have to. Bitcoin and EVM wallets can hold Meritum tokens regardless.

And youre not a second class citizen for it. Lite accounts show up in the feeds like everybody else. People follow you, you follow them, and it works in every direction between the two kinds of account. Your posts land on Hive through a Lumen publisher account.

To add in incentive to create full Hive accounts, a lite post declines rewards. The day you want to earn, you upgrade.

The Discovery - The feed does not care about payouts

Trending on Hive has been basically a leaderboard of "big number go top". It had nothing to do with what people care about. It had nothing to do with Hive itself. All it was is a lazy choice by frontends to rank content. We have all known this for years. Everyone was just ok with it while Web2 iterated on content discovery, the primary job of a social media site, we have done very little in that regards. Kept funding with no expectations. Nobody for a second thought to themselves:

Maybe, just maybe, Ned Scott didnt solve social media and didnt get it right 10 years ago.

Thats why Lumen ships with a working algorithm using the Hive social graph, taking account of engagement primarily. It adds a popularity lane across all of Hive so something genuinely big outside your bubble still reaches you instead of dying in a community you dont follow. The chain math is untouched, ofc. Downvotes still do exactly what they always did to a payout. They just dont decide what you get to see anymore. Downvote whatever you want, all you want. You dont get to run the feed with it or affect its visibility. What people forget is that none of this has anything to do with Hive itself, it only has to do with the choice of Hive frontends.

Meritum. Your own token, your own community token, in about twenty seconds.

Screenshot (2396).png

This is the big addition to Lumen. It is what sets it apart from any other Hive frontend.

Social media users have followers. On Lumen you have holders.

Press launch. Three screens. Name three things youll genuinely do for people and what you charge for them. Hold the coin down and your market is open. Maybe you want to create a token for your own community and create an economy for that specific community, you can even do that.

No contract to write. No liquidity to set up. No pitch deck, no permission, no waiting on anybody. It costs nothing to launch and the first month is free. After that its about $10 a month to stay listed. Why? Monetization.

The curve

The curve rises, slowly, and on purpose. Your first token costs about 1.01 HBD. The hundredth costs 1.81 HBD. The thousandth costs 11.50 HBD. Put a thousand dollars into a new Meritum token and you get 380 of them, and you move the price 4.3x. Put the same thousand into a friend.tech key and you get 26, and you move it 676x. Their hundredth key cost $1,550 against our 1.81. A curve that goes vertical in twenty buys doesn’t serve a community. It's a shearing pen, and your own fans are the flock. Creating an exploitative system is something I did not want to do.

Six week maturity

Sell before six weeks and you pay an exit fee that starts at 15% and slides straight down to zero as you hold. Half of it goes to the creator, half to Lumen. And the maturity travels with the token. Buy from somebody whos held five weeks and you inherit their five weeks. This of course exists to stop fast flipping, hurting your community, it is supposed to facilitate the actual user economy that this creates.

And then the actual point of the whole thing

Holders can ask you for work.

Users set the USD price of their content or services. Users acquire that creator’s token through the market and spend it to purchase what the creator offers. If demand for the creator’s work increases, more users need their token, and the market price can rise, not because the creator promised investors a return, but because more people want to consume what they produce.

The creator receives the same token as payment and can either use it within the ecosystem or sell it back into the market. But creators and users operate under the same rules: an exit tax applies over the full term, discouraging short-term pump-and-dump behavior and aligning incentives around actually using the token.

The result is a new creator economy where attention can become demand, demand becomes token utility, and utility creates a market around the user’s work.

It’s not simply a token attached to a person. It’s a marketplace for what that person creates.

Bitcoin and Ethereum wallets can hold Hive creator tokens

This is the piece nobody else has, and its the reason any of the rest of it matters.

Meritum tokens live on Magi smart contracts, and Magi doesnt only speak Hive. Hive accounts, Ethereum addresses and Bitcoin addresses are all first class identities on it.

So a guy with nothing but MetaMask can hold and trade a Hive user token. And a Hive account can hold and trade one launched from a BTC wallet. Same market, same contract. Somebody sitting on Bitcoin can back a Hive creator, and get paid to do a job for one, without ever making a Hive account.

Thats what interoperability was supposed to mean before the word got worn out.

So thats it

If anyone is interested in trying it out, let me know. Feedback welcome, especially the harsh kind. Thats the useful kind. For direct interaction. Join the Magi discord. There is a specific room there for Lumen. https://discord.gg/qm9VqAtJ2

Just logged in and trying to figure it out. The user interface looks good anyway (Firefox on Linux PC).

What I find most interesting here isn't just the token itself, but the idea of connecting a creator's audience with actual demand for their skills or services.

Coming from someone who is interested in building an online income with limited resources, the “creator as a small economy” concept is really interesting to me. It makes me think beyond simply receiving an upvote for a post and asks a bigger question: can a creator turn their reputation and skills into something people can actually use?

At the same time, I think the biggest challenge will be simplicity. New users shouldn't need to understand every technical detail before they can see the value.

If Lumen can make the experience simple for ordinary creators while keeping the deeper token mechanics available for people who want them, I think that could be very interesting.

I'm curious to see where this goes, especially once creators start offering real services and we can see actual use cases rather than just the technology itself.

Congratulations on launching it, and thanks for being open to the critical feedback too. That's probably the most valuable part of an early project like this.

I guess the reputation does not work as it should:

  • @daveks(83)· 7d

Let’s say I buy a token minted by stayoutoftherz, I can hold it, sell it to anyone, or send it back to him and receive the task/offer?

  • @artofkylin(66)· 8d

Oh this is really cool I'm def gonna be checking it out. I love the idea of a built in way to be like "Yes, I will draw things for you."

If I downvote something on lumen will it tell the algo "I want less of this?"

I'm intrigued by the token idea but don't think I'm at a point where I'd be able to make much use of it.

  • Why it was refused, @lordbutterfly ? the + or / characters? image.png

  • I will try it out, but it appears a bit complicated. Lite accounts is not entirely new, btw. And why only 64 characters to describe the service?

  • @tengolotodo(78)· 8d

This is certainly an interesting experiment and I’m always happy to see someone building something new on Hive rather than just writing another post about what Hive needs to gather more rewards for themselves.

When I read about the Meritum creator tokens, my immediate thought was haven’t we been here before?

BitClout/DeSo, Rally, Roll and Friend.tech all experimented with tradeable tokens or keys linked to individual creators, I even joined a few of them myself. Most either closed or faded away into fluff all, so I’d be interested to hear what lessons Lumen has taken from them, and what makes you think this model is more sustainable.

However, the services element could be the important difference here. Giving a creator token genuine utility is much stronger than asking people to buy it simply because they believe its creator will become more popular. Micro tasks and micro rewards are all over the internet, that being said though, many of them are inaccessible to the very countries that need them, Nigeria, Venezuela etc..

Even so, launching tokens is the easy bit ... getting enough buyers and creating lasting reasons to hold and use them is the real challenge. Didn't PeakF try some tasks type thing a while ago.

Fluff me though, I also had a wee chuckle at the section ...

The Discovery - The feed does not care about payouts

I visited Lumen before joining, opened the For You feed and fluff me not, but the posts displayed were almost entirely the familiar high-earning and heavily voted ones! With dollar rewards displayed to boot!

That may be because engagement, comments and votes are feeding the algorithm rather than the dollar value directly? But if those signals lead us back to the same established authors and highest-paying posts, has discovery really changed ,,, or have we simply taken a different road to get to the same place?

I really would love for this to be somewhere that new authors have the same opportunities as the usual suspects from STEEM. So I’d love to know...

... How does the feed give an excellent post from a smaller or newer account a genuine chance? ... Do vote count and voter reputation influence its ranking? ... Is there an element of randomness or exploration to stop established accounts dominating? ... What determines the For You feed before Lumen knows anything about a visitor?

There is plenty here worth exploring, and I’ll certainly have a proper fluff around with it. In fact as soon as I post this I will login and maybe create a token..

But at first glance, the discovery feed appears to care about many of the same signals that produce large payouts ... even if it technically never reads the payout figure itself.

The Bottom line is that is good to see something created to benefit HIVE that is not using our DHF dosh.

  • @oflyhigh(86)· 8d

Wow, this looks really cool! The features are powerful, and the interface looks great too.

It also solves many of the pain points with the current HIVE frontends.

I hope it keeps getting better and better!

  • @deanliu(83)· 8d

I'm impressed by both the problem you've identified and the solution you're proposing, which aligns closely with my own thinking. Hence deeply interested in your solution, Lumen, though I am still wrapping my head around it... It seems I'll need to look into Magi as well right? Also very interested in the claim of owning your own fans and community - if it's working I might start trying to build one. Look forward to more use cases, guidance, and explanations, and I hope this project achieves great success. Btw, the website looks great.

  • @godfish(78)· 8d

Not sure if people who demand microjobs and tasks online would be that interested in tokenomics, which seems rather complicated at first glance, considering there are platforms where you just pay as you go.

Do you have a marketing plan in mind? Reaching out to the right audience outside Hive is imo crucial.

Anyway, best of luck! I'll give it a shot in a few days.

  • @dudeontheweb(70)· 8d

Maybe, just maybe, Ned Scott didnt solve social media and didnt get it right 10 years ago.

Sorry, just had to. 🤣 Congrats on the Lumen launch. Can't wait to try it out.

  • Pretty neat. Signed in with Brave wallet, so that seems to work.

looks like a product to sell an idea but lets see whats happened with the users, as a frontend dev i can say that with AI everybody can create something beauty but get users and give a real to stay there is another thing take in mind that cursor like every AI is a great indexer looking in public portfolios doing copy/paste with a few updates :(

  • @seckorama(78)· 8d

I support all the new front-ends that are emerging. This one is interesting because of this new creator economy. Others, by the way, have Points. It’s clearly gotten underway. Now, that’s all well and good, but when I log in and 3SPK isn’t working for me, and if I create a Merit token through your smart contract, I can’t sell people something that doesn’t work in your front-end… But it is the beginning of a new path—I completely agree.

  • @wildwhispore(55)· 8d

Sounds interesting, but seems to add a lot of complexity that many if not most creators and consumers aren't going to want to deal with. Hive earnings are simple and even that's not bringing them in...

  • @vikisecrets(80)· 9d

Cool frontend and token idea, reminds me a bit of bitclout / deso. Long post titles are quite trimmed on Lumen. Often only two words are visible on mobile.

  • Sounds very promising. Will check it for sure and also taking a look into the token creation. Not sure if it is worth to pay $10 a month when nobody is ever willing to buy some :)

This sounds fascinating. Of course I'll give it a shot. Not sure how much value people see in me, but hey my mom might buy my token :) So I'm game!

Love the idea man, congrats on it!! And love that this has been developed without DHF hand outs!

  • @latinowinner(58)· 9d

  • @bulliontools(75)· 9d

Very cool! I love the idea! I'll have to dig into the creator tokens idea more.

    !BBH !PIZZA !ALIVE

  • @dlmmqb(76)· 9d

Edit: Okay, I got the answers! For others ;) keep digging....

so how can I create my fanbase token? also, I have to keep paying 10$ a month to get it listed or what?

    Edit (2):

What happens if someone buys this token and it gets delisted because creator didn't paid 10$ monthly fee? image.png

    Edit (3):

Bought first what token by this whatever confusing system so I am part of the hive history now as FIRST lol

    image.png

    Edit (4):

    Finally done!

    image.png

Edit (5): It's a freelance market I have to pay 10$ a month to be a part of. Also, I must find my own services buyers to be paid. Just buying my tokens won't pay me for free. It's a complex upwork/freelancer website.

  • @spinvest(77)· 9d

This is pretty cool. Finally a frontend with an algo. I look forward to testing the feed and researching creator tokens further.

    Good job man 😁
