Injusticia laboral/ Workplace injustice (Spa - Eng)

Fuente/Source

Hello, community. One of the most unpleasant things in this world is witnessing an injustice and being unable to intervene. The sense of powerlessness weighs heavily on you inside.

I am currently in my second job in three months—actually, my second job ever—but I am not here to talk about my own situation, but rather that of a coworker.

This sounds unreal: he left the company, and you won't believe how much they paid him for his work over the course of a full year—during which he alternated between weeks of day shifts and weeks of night shifts!

The payment for all that time—the "settlement," as we call it in Venezuela—was only 600 bolivars. To give you an idea of why I’m so outraged: today, one dollar is worth 848.55 bolivars. That means 600 bolivars is equivalent to $0.70—barely 70 US cents. That’s enough to buy two canilla loaves of bread, and that’s it.

I found a post offering advice on this matter here.

I imagine that if one went to the Ministry of Labor and filed a complaint, the company would be forced to pay what they withheld. But that’s just my imagination; I’m told that’s not how it works. That, unfortunately, is not the case. And the feeling of powerlessness remains strong.

Wow, that's not a lot of severance pay at all. So filing a complaint wouldn't do anything?
