Rather than a standard review, today I want to share my latest acquisition with you. I am a fan of books in general—and Jane Austen’s novels in particular—but *Sense and Sensibility* holds a special place in my heart above all else. I must confess that I first saw the 1995 film starring Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman, and Emma Thompson (who not only played Elinor Dashwood but also wrote the screenplay); the story left a lasting impression on me. Later, I had the chance to read the book, which opened the door to all of Austen’s works for me. So, you can imagine the excitement I felt when I walked into a bookstore looking for something else and suddenly stumbled upon this beautiful, illuminated edition. I didn't own a physical copy—I had previously read the digital version—but there it was on the shelf, featuring the very movie cover that had made me fall in love with the original story.
Más que una Review hoy quiero mostrarles mi más reciente adquisición, y es que yo soy fan de los libros en general pero sobre todo de las novelas de Jane Austen y por sobre todas las cosas de Sentido y Sensibilidad, debo confesarles que yo primero vi la película del año 95 con Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman y Emma Thompson (donde además de interpretar a Elinor Dashwood fue también guionista) y la historia me quedó grabada en la memoria y en el corazón, hasta que posteriormente tuve la oportunidad de leer el libro, y esa fue, en mi caso, la puerta a a todas las obras de Austen, así que ustedes imaginen la emoción que sentí cuando entré a la librería en busca de algo y de pronto me encontré con esa joya iluminada, yo no tenía el libro (lo había leído en su versión digital) pero estaba ahí en el estante y además con la portada de la película que me hizo enamorarme de la historia original.
After checking the price and seeing that it was quite affordable, I didn't hesitate to pick it up from the shelf; it was sitting there among other famous titles, yet that specific book called out to me and held a magnetic attraction. Tras comprobar el precio y ver que estaba bastante accesible no dudé en tomarlo del estante, estaba allí entre otros títulos célebres pero era ese libro específicamente el que me llamaba y me atraía de forma magnética, en la portada aparecen Kate Winslet (en la parte superior como Marianne Dashwood) y Emma Thompson como Elinor Dashwood
In case you aren't familiar with this beautiful story, here is a summary: there are three Dashwood sisters—all from a second marriage—who, following their father's death, are left dependent on the annual allowance provided by their brother. However, the heart of the story isn't their financial situation but rather their distinct personalities, with the eldest two, Elinor and Marianne, standing out in particular. Elinor is very reserved with her emotions; she always puts others before herself and strives to do the right thing. She finds it difficult to express her feelings and, even when in love, prefers to suffer in silence. Marianne, on the other hand, is outgoing and highly emotional; she speaks her mind and makes no attempt to hide her feelings. Yet, she is very intense, and it is precisely because she isn't afraid to give her heart away that she ends up suffering for love—all while Colonel Brandon (my favorite literary crush from this novel) loves her deeply without ever encroaching on her space, proving through his actions that he will always be by her side to protect her.
En caso de que no conozcas esta preciosa historia te haré un resumen, las hermanas Dashwood son tres, todas hijas de un segundo matrimonio, así que luego de la muerte de su padre quedan a merced de la pensión que su hermano les entregará anualmente, sin embargo el eje central de esta historia n es su situación financiera sino sus personalidades distintas en las cuales destacan Elinor y Marianne por ser las mayores. Elinor es muy contenida en sus emociones, siempre piensa en los demás antes que en sí misma, siempre piensa en hacer lo correcto y le cuesta expresar sus emociones, a pesar de que está enamorada prefiere sufrir en silencio. Marianne por el contrario es extrovertida y muy emotiva, dice lo que piensa y no tiene miedo de esconder sus emociones, pero es muy intensa y precisamente por no tener miedo de entregar su corazón es que termina sufriendo por amor, mientras que el coronel Brandom (mi crush literario favorito de esta novela) la ama intensamente pero sin invadir su espacio, demostrándole con hechos que él estará siempre a su lado para protegerla.
If you are looking for a romantic story that is also a period piece with some amusing scenes, this one is for you; true to Austen’s style, it is a book about complex human emotions that also features her characteristic critique of society and its elitist customs of the era.
Si estás buscando alguna historia romántica pero que además sea de época y con algunas escenas divertidas esta es para ti, tal como Austen nos tiene acostumbrados es un libro sobre emociones humanas complejas pero también contiene la acostumbrada critica sobre la sociedad y sus costumbres elitistas de época.
