Overview/Resumen

This beautiful tale by Hans Christian Andersen tells of a woman’s desperate longing for a child—a longing so intense that she eventually turned to a witch, who gave her a magic seed. When the woman planted the seed, it blossomed months later, and from it emerged Thumbelina—a girl so tiny that she slept inside a walnut shell. The two lived very happily together, but one day, a wicked toad kidnapped Thumbelina, intending for her to marry her son. Thumbelina managed to escape, however, traveling away on a lotus flower with the help of some fish. She was soon abducted again—this time by a bumblebee—but the bee’s friends rejected her because she was different. A field mouse later rescued her, allowing Thumbelina to survive the winter; yet, the mouse insisted that she marry her neighbor, a mole. Meanwhile, an injured swallow fell nearby, and Thumbelina nursed it back to health. On the very day of the wedding, the swallow took Thumbelina upon its back and carried her far away from the forced marriage, bringing her to a warm, distant land where she eventually married the prince of the flowers. Oh, and what’s more, Thumbelina receives fairy wings and a new name: "Maya."

My Opinion/Mi Opinión

There is much to analyze in this story. First, there is the intrinsic need some human beings feel to have a child—some due to societal pressure, others simply because they desire it. Thumbelina’s mother was so desperate that she even turned to a witch to have her. Unfortunately, a toad separated them, and—according to the story’s ending—they never see each other again. I suspect, however, that this is the author’s way of representing the transition from childhood to adulthood: the changes, the separations, the decisions—all of it.

On the other hand, Thumbelina represents resilience and the human capacity to bring out the best in oneself (when one chooses to). For instance, despite how sad she felt about her impending forced marriage to the field mouse’s neighbor, her heart did not grow cold. Even amidst fear, uncertainty, and sorrow, she tended to the swallow—caring for the bird without any thought as to whether it might prove useful to her later on; she simply did so because the gesture came straight from her heart. As it turned out, the swallow was deeply grateful; it recognized the kindness in its caretaker’s heart and acted accordingly. This gracious expression of gratitude served as a reward—one that Thumbelina had not asked for, yet one that she truly deserved.

Moreover, her new name and fairy wings are not merely a reward; they confirm that she is no longer the person she once was—that the entire process has completely transformed her. She is now wiser, better equipped to fend for herself (her wings grant her independence), and capable of going as far as she chooses.
