🇻🇪 Bandos (ES/EN)

***

Voy triste, Venezuela.

¡Arriba, Venezuela!

🇻🇪 Sides (ES/EN)

***

I'm sad, Venezuela. For you, for your cause and your tragedy. I've read some Venezuelan posts on Hive. One writes with their heart on their sleeve, detailing the collapse, the dead, the split street. Next to it, a photo of hallacas with a foodie's eye light, and the comments fly back and forth. "How can you post that now?" "And what do you hope to accomplish with your lament?" Both believe they have the truth. Both are lying to themselves.

What no one admits is that the poet, at 8 p.m., scrolls through sweet bread recipes like a madman. The arepa girl swallows her tears in the bathroom while the news reports the numbers. That's the hypocrisy that sustains us. We need mourning and celebration to keep from going mad. Unceasing lament rots. Celebration without memory makes us idiots.

Why insist on choosing sides?

The earthquake wiped out the homes of rich and poor, the most-voted tragic post, and the joke that made three people laugh. When the dust settled, a question remained.

Are burying the dead and celebrating that we are alive opposites?

The discussion on Hive isn't about the earthquake. It's about the right to process it without being judged. The verse and the frying pan are the same reflection: clinging to something when the earth moves. But the nervousness prevents us from seeing that they are in the same kitchen, with the same fire lit, waiting.

The arguments in the comments, the war of factions, the need to tell the other person that their pain is unnecessary or that their celebration is shameful, is a trap. The earthquake doesn't distinguish between posts or recipes, flags or coats. It passes and leaves dust and a single question in its very nature, just one. How to go on?

The poet and the cook are not enemies. They are two people in the same waiting room, with the same fear, the same longing for someone to tell them that everything will be alright. One writes because they can't cook. The other cooks because they can't write. Both lay a brick in the wall so that the house of hope doesn't collapse. Hive gives us back what shames us. We point out "you're not okay" so as not to say "I'm afraid." We cook, we write, we cry in the bathroom with the tap running, fear.

When the noise subsides and the trending topics fade, the two posts will remain, the chronicle of pain and the happy recipe. Someone will read them and understand nothing. But someone else will. You will see the same sentence expressed with different tools. The poem and the cooking pot are ways of saying "I'm still here." They will be the testament that there were people who refused to surrender. That matters. That someone, in the midst of the collapse, decided to write or cook. That gesture, small or large, is an act of resistance. Resistance without sides, the trembling hand holding the spoon, the throat tightening as it speaks the verse.

That's why I go here sad, Venezuela. I see the depth and the struggle, but also the lit stove and the half-finished poem. As long as there is someone cooking and someone writing, all is not lost. My unwelcome faith asks for no permission and seeks no approval. It fits in a saucepan and a verse. That faith is the answer to the trembling, clinging to anything to avoid falling. Sadness is not the end. It is the beginning of something yet to be named. Perhaps that something is faith.

Up with you, Venezuela!

Bandos reads like a proper escape just from the photo, and your ES/EN notes make the place feel reachable instead of like another far-off resort slideshow.

Words speak of how we perceive tragedy, of conflicting emotions, our attitude toward life, our stance toward it.

The country isn't accustomed to earthquakes, and then, on top of the hardship the people are already enduring, this tragedy strikes. It's like the saying, "Some cry, others make handkerchiefs to sell."

We saw everything from solidarity to the most cruel situations that can disturb people. It's the response to the disaster, but in the end, we have to move forward and take a breath.

Life goes on; everyone carries an earthquake within them, and we never know when it will strike.

Under normal circumstances, we find it difficult to accept that others feel, think, and act differently, and that their way is just as valid as our own. In extreme situations, this is even harder to accept. Nature has become extreme, and so has human nature. We have witnessed acts of heroism saving lives, acts of depravity obstructing rescue efforts, and acts of manipulation claiming that one thing or another has been nothing more than media fabrications. My dad used to say, "I don't believe what history books say because history is written—in their own way—by the victors." Everything is complicated; we're all biased, mentally, and emotionally we're all cracked and broken. We don't know what to do with all this internal turmoil... whether you call it fear or not, guilt or not. Most of us don't know what to do with our inner selves... how difficult it is to understand someone else's inner world. Well... it's not about understanding, but about accepting. One person cries while another listens to music; each is clinging to a burning ember. One person watches everything on TikTok, another isolates themselves from the news. It's because one needs to see and the other needs not to see. Here, a dry law was decreed as part of the official, general mourning. There would have been those who took refuge in alcohol to vent, to loosen up, not to celebrate. Some, with a twisted sense of humor, repeat the phrase of a very popular comedian from a few decades ago who wondered if it could be that We Venezuelans in our previous incarnation took the baby bottle away from the Baby Jesus somewhere, and that is why we have received so many blows from different directions for so long.

Thank you, my friend, for being close to us even from afar and trying to describe what we don't understand about ourselves, what we don't know how to handle in our inner selves. We are all deeply hurt in some way, all in different ways, and fear—whether acknowledged or not, confessed or not—wreaks havoc amidst the pain, sadness, longing, feelings of powerlessness and anger, and the guilt we feel for carrying on. It's tough.

Hola @marabuzal, buen día, me gusto tu perspectiva.
