😱 «Un Café Para Los Muertos»/RELATO (ES/EN)

Fuente

Nunca.

😱 “A Coffee for the Dead”/SHORT STORY (ES/EN)

Source

The morning I woke up earlier than usual to go to my doctor's appointment, the coffee hadn't even boiled yet, and I already knew that something in the house felt different. I drank the first sip anyway, and the second, and it was between the second and third that the kitchen filled with crosses, stone crosses, crooked, their names washed away by the rain, and between them a mist that trailed along the floor and smelled of disturbed earth. The cup was still in my hand. My fingers held it. But my fingers were white as candle wax, and through them—I swear on what little sanity I have left—through them I could see the dust of graves. The clock struck the hour. Everything returned. I drank the rest of the coffee, and it tasted strange.

I spat in the sink, and the spit was dark. I didn't look at it twice. Even then, I was beginning to be afraid of looking at things twice.

Out on the street, the air bit me but didn't wake me. A skinny dog, tied to a fence, stood up when it saw me and growled a long growl and backed away until the rope broke. Men passed by me without saying hello, and it wasn't rudeness; their eyes skimmed over me like water over glass.

I won't speak of the office. I'll just say that the clatter of the typewriters, all afternoon, sounded to me like the tapping of fingernails on a closed lid. And that in the dark glass of the monitor, when I leaned over, I didn't see my face. I saw a slab. And on the slab, my name, and a birthdate I recognize, and a second date I don't dare write here, because it hasn't arrived yet, and because I fear—and this fear is what keeps me awake, sir, and what will keep me awake until it's all over!—that by writing it, I'll make it true.

That night, when sleep finally overtook me, I dreamed of an endless cemetery under an ashen moon, and of an open grave, and of a steaming cup of coffee at the foot of a tombstone bearing my name. I awoke with my heart pounding in my ribs like a fist from within.

I wasn't in my bed.

I stood in the cemetery, the earth from the grave digging under my fingernails, the coppery taste of blood lingering in my mouth. And I understood, with that terrible clarity that only madness or death brings, that the two heartbeats of the morning had not been a dream or a vision, but a warning. And that I, without knowing it, had spent my entire life walking along the edge of that warning, and that now that this door had opened, it would never, ever, ever close again. Never again. Never.

Magistral mi estimado amigo @marabuzal. Magistral y espeluznante.
