Well, I've seen a lot of scenarios that pertains to this topic, once that are a very clear and obvious abuse of power instances. And I'm sure a lot of us have had one or two experiences as well, or have seen such. But then, I wouldn't be talking about an abuse of power in most ways people often think or see, what I will be saying is a real life story an a very clear abuse of power too, not just your regular kind. This type is one where when person gets into a place of authority or are given a position, one that is meant to help, guide, lead and serve others, they get there and began to use hat same position if authority to intimidate, punish and make like difficult for others.
I won't be going too far, this instance I want to share happened in a school setting. There's this student who's unable to pay his school fees. And he tried and much as possible to explain to the person in charge, but she wouldn't listen to him. The boy begged for some time, asked her to have mercy on him and just give him and his parents just some little time, but this woman refused to listen. She asked the boy to go pick his bag and return home, immediately this guy got tobuis class to pack his bags, this woman entered just right after him and began to embarrass him in front of everyone, calling him names and all of that. She said words that I won't be able to repeat here, well, the boy left in tears, and you know why I called this an abuse of power. That same day, she allowed a other student stay all because she knows him. Sge allows someone she knows get away with similar/same thing. She has the power to ask the first boy to stay too, but she refused
To me, this is as well an abuse of power. I understand how school functions, I know pay is important to keep things running, I understand that there are rules and regulations, an I also understand that she's doing her job, but my problem is why treat a fellow human like that and also, why should that same law/rules favour some set of people while deliberately making life difficult for others. You're just trying to let us know you're in control, it is your office and you can do and undo.
And one of the things edging this kind of people on is that those who are often times there victims won't always speak up for fear of worsening the situation, also, those who're there when stuffs like that happen too won't want to get involved because they feel it is none of their concern or because they don't want to get involved, else they become the next target. And all of this makes me this abusers of power feel they're untouchable and unquestionable.
The fact that you're in a position doesn't mean you're better than others or those in a situation that needs your help. Authority and responsibility goes together, and that is what we should keep in mind, no matter the position we're occupying. Also, we shouldn't keep quiet when we see things like that, why treat someone else in an unfair way all because you're in the position. We should also stop defending wrong behaviors all because the person involved is a friend, family member or someone close to us, I will also suggest that organizations, companies, agencies and all should create or provide an avenue that people who get abused or unfair treatment can as well complain and make it known, and they should as well investigate it and do what's necessary regardless of who is involved.
With more power comes more responsibility, and the true test of leadership isn't in how much intimidating you're, but in how you treat people, including those who may not even have anything to do for you in return.
