While growing up, all I wanted was just to become an adult, because I felt then I would have freedom to do whatever; no one would order me to go and sleep, no one would need to know my movement or start monitoring me, and I would have freedom to go out, to have fun, and all. To me, as an adult, you can get to live your life.... To the fullest.
I never knew it was way better back then when we were still young. Then we cried whenever we were hungry, and when we were given food to eat, we cried for biscuits, and they bought them for us. When we are going to school too, they will give us money, food, and all. We never thought about how it will come or how they will get it, ours is just to to ask/demand for it. It's up to our parents/guardians to find the means of getting it.
Smiles 😊 😁 😊, I remember how I used to look at my uncles and some older relatives back then, when we asked them for something and they said they didn't have it, or they put us on what we call "it's coming." At times they won't even respond to us or our messages. We thought they were just stingy back then and didn't want to help. We didn't understand 🤦. And some that we know aren't doing well either; we thought they were not just serious with their lives... We didn't understand. 🤦
Now, that adulthood is has came in on us too. We never knew this is how it is. We weren't prepared for this kind of freedom we are now experiencing. Not only that, but we didn't know adulthood is this weighty, filled with bills, responsibilities, and expectations. And some even see you and think you're having it easy and that you've had things all figured out, whereas you're still battling with your life.
There's no one to cry to when you're hungry; you just have to work and figure things out for yourself. Now you have those asking you for help, and you tell them the same thing you were told back then too, and it's not because you're stingy and didn't want to help, but because you truly don't have it. To even sort out the small things for ourselves now feels like a lot... Things like transport, rent, food, data, and such.
Life has now humbled us, and we can now understand.
Adulthood is filled with responsibilities, and for us who didn't grow up with a silver spoon, it feels even more weighty for us: no connections, no rich dad, mom, uncle, or anyone to reach out to. The pressure of adulthood is so much; you can't even cry out in public like you used to as a kid; you have to smile like it is fine and you can handle it, whereas you're breaking and crying inside of you. You now have to manage, endure, and keep going even when you're tired.
Childhood and adulthood are different from each other... Almost like words and their opposites 🤣. And I can't help but smile while writing this, not because it is funny, but because it's the truth I can't run away from. It is my reality. When I see these young ones wanting to grow up and be like...don't worry, I will soon be an adult too; I will just smile. Because they don't understand. If only they did, if only they understood that adulthood is not an escape but an escapade on its own.
Even still, nevertheless, regardless, nonetheless, upon still, despite that... We move.
