[Movie] Movie Review: My Village People.

Hello, everyone. Welcome once again to my blog. Today, we will be reviewing a movie titled My Village People. Yeah, that is the title. I'm sure if you're a Nigerian, you will understand what village people often refer to, and if you don't, in Nigeria we use such terms for powerful people in our villages, let's say the wizards and witches who do not want one to progress.

I knew I was in for a comedy show when I saw the writer of the movie, Bovi. Yeah, Bovi is a Nigerian standup comedian who's very funny and good at what he does. Now seeing him produce a movie, I knew it would be all laughs. And trust me, that is what it is. The story follows a guy called Prince, a very wealthy guy who's carefree and doesn't believe in anything supernatural, not to talk of some village people. His sister was set to have her traditional wedding, so he set out to travel to the village.

And since he's also a womanizer, he began to do the same in the village too; even though there are warnings, he turned a deaf ear to it all, and he got involved and had things to do with women. That was where Haggai came in. Haggai isn't really an ordinary girl; it was these village people that had used her to get to Prince. And because Prince only wanted to have fun, he didn't take Haggai seriously even when she kept insisting that he should declare his love for her.

It took some time for Prince to know that he had attracted not just the witches but also the attention of marine spirits too. And that was how he got caught between the supernatural worlds/forces. And that was how the once upon-a-time guy who does not believe in the idea of village people began to see things and experience stuff that he can't seem to comprehend; this led him to start going to different people for solutions.

I enjoyed this movie, no doubt about that. The idea and storyline were great, just some offs, which I would state before I conclude. Also, the idea of taking that popular phrase "village people," and turning it into a great movie like that is something I find interesting and entertaining.

Bovi played the role of Prince, and he's the best fit for it, no doubt about that, especially because he's also a comedian, so he was able to act it out in a very cool way without forcing himself to be funny. It flowed naturally.

Also, the movie consists of a few quiet but amazing actors, the likes of Charles Inojie, Racheal Oniga, Nkem, Ada Ameh, and many others. Each of these actors came in with their own energy and gave the movie what it needs to stand out. I love how all that worked together to make sure the movie feels like something really rooted in the Nigerian folklore.

I began to feel somehow though when the movie began to go through different stages; here you're seeing the mermaids, then the next scene you're seeing pastors, and then the next you have the witches. Not as if it wasn't cool, but they kept doing too much of everything, even though you may not really notice it due to the comedy it contains.

I also have an issue with the sound and music too. I think Nollywood is doing better now, though, but here in the village, the sound was a no-no for me; there are even times the sound is so loud that you won't hear what the characters were saying. Also, I feel it should as well center a lot more on the village people than it did. There's also this scene where the witches suddenly appeared to the prince. Guess what Prince did? He just laughed and seemed unflinchingly calm. Common, aren't you even supposed to be a bit scared? Who does that?

I had a great time watching this movie, though; it is a masterpiece, and big kudos to Bovi for this. He did amazingly well with the funny moments and those crazy situations.

I tend to get turned off on a movie when I can't hear what the characters are saying because of sounds that I don't even enjoy listening to.

But yeah, I'd love any movie Bovi is on because of his funny nature. He's a good really.

A story full of humor with some rather zany scenes; perhaps they resorted to exaggeration to achieve their goal: to make people laugh. It's a shame about the music; that's an aspect that should have been given more attention.
