I watched this movie just yesterday, and I'm yet to get it out of my head, like... It's a true life story about Mark Zuckerberg, the internet, and how Facebook came to be. The movie is titled The Social Network. I'm even more amazed that it has been released since the year 2010 and I'm just getting to watch it now.
The storyline follows how Mark, who was then a student of Harvard University, created Facebook. He first created FaceMash, and it was a success, so he went ahead to create Facebook, together with Eduardo Saverin, his best friend. But then he didn't have it easy because Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss accused him of stealing and using their intellectual property. They said that because they had already walked up to him and asked him to help them build something called "HarvardConnection," well, Mark got it; he looked at a bigger picture than what they came up with, and that was what gave birth to Facebook. It was initially called The Facebook.
Along the line, Sean Parker came in; he was the one who encouraged Mark to think bigger and do some things. He helped him, no doubt about that, but their closeness and the way he keeps pushing Mark make the bond between Mark and Eduardo Saverin, his best friend, weaken. Also, the Winklevoss who had accused Mark of stealing their intellectual property too, took it up, but Mark kept insisting he did not. He said he created something bigger and even went ahead to tell them he didn't use their code.... Which was true, though.
What actually surprised me most about this movie is that I never knew Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg had to go through so much just so to be today. Various lawsuits, settlements, and all of that.
I enjoy this movie so much, no doubt about that. It is not all those kinds of action movies where you want them to shoot, to fight, and all; here it is always talking, arguing, disagreeing, and a lot more. But none of it is boring. I love the friendship between Eduardo and Mark; they are very great friends, but slowly they began to break apart. And the hit came when Eduardo, who was a part of all of these things from the onset, finds out that he's no more. He had about 30+% of Facebook shares; he saw it and, as a CFO, was asked to sign, but he made the mistake of not reading through the papers he was signing. Not long after, he was pushed out, and he had less than 1% of the company. It pained him, and in all honesty, it pained me too. Why would Mark do this to him...? Why?
I'm really glad I watched this movie, though. A lot of things I didn't know happened were what I saw. And can we really say Mark stole their idea, or did he just have a bigger picture of things? This movie is a true life story; I mean, it was exactly what happened in real life and how Facebook came to be.
And the actors, I give it to them. Very brilliant. Jesse Eisenberg acted as Mark Zuckerberg and he got it, his facial expression, the way he dresses and all of that, Andrew Garfield also acts as Eduardo Saverin and he nailed that role too, and then to Justin Timberlake, the great guy himself acted as Sean Parker. You see, those three nailed it for me. There are other people in the movie, but then these three... They killed it.
At the end, the Winklevoss twins were settled with some amount of money. What made me happy the most at the end of the day was that Eduardo Saverin was not just settled; his position as a CFO was also restored, even though he lost a lot.
I recommend this movie.
