Que gran día en Mérida 🏞️// What a great day in Mérida! 🏞️

Hola querida comunidad Hive ❤️ Hello dear Hive cummunity ❤️

I’m continuing with my trip to Mérida since a single post wasn’t enough to cover everything I did on the trip—it was a three-day trip where we visited so many places and did so many things.

The second day was definitely my favorite, and not just because we visited a place in Mérida that I love, but because I checked off one more item from my “things I have to do in my youth” list 😂.

This day was way more extreme—we hiked for about 30 minutes through the mountains along very narrow trails to reach the hot springs, I went down the second-longest zip line in the country, we went to the municipal market to buy souvenirs (I think that was the most extreme thing we did, since it involved spending money 😂).

The first thing we had to do was have breakfast to get our energy up for everything that awaited us that day, so we got ready very early and waited for the inn staff to call us to come to the dining room for breakfast. In the meantime, we took photos of ourselves against the beautiful backdrops the inn offered, with the morning sun already beating down—though it was that cold weather unique to Mérida. The inn is located in the town of Tabay, about 30–40 minutes from the city of Mérida. Honestly, for me, it’s one of my favorite places in Mérida and a perfect little town since it’s not too far from the city, the weather is perfect, and it has everything you need.

Once we’d finished breakfast, it was time to catch the bus to our first destination: “Las Aguas Termales de la Musui” 🏞️.

The bus dropped us off at a certain spot, and there we had to transfer to another bus because the road leading to the actual trail toward the hot springs was very narrow, and only small, narrow buses could navigate it. After that, we were dropped off at our stop, where we would begin the climb to our destination. I have to admit I was really surprised when I returned to that place—it had changed so much. Five years ago, when I went, there was just a tiny little hut where they let you use the bathroom to change and sold a few trinkets here and there. Not anymore—now there’s a well-stocked general store, small food stalls serving slightly more elaborate meals like breakfast, and up above, the ticket booth if you’re planning to ride up on horses.

Right then, we found out there was a zip line, and my cousins and I only needed one look to know we were obviously going to take the plunge 😂. They told us it was best to do it on our way down from the waterfalls before leaving, since the trail takes you almost straight to that spot, so we just paid and set off.

The trail isn't really difficult or grueling. At the beginning, you have to climb a mountain, which is the hardest part of the route because of the steep incline, but once you reach the top, it's all flat and much easier to manage. The view from this spot is simply a 10,000 out of 10—seeing Mérida’s iconic mountains, the perfect weather, the sun beating down but adding that touch of beauty to the landscape. That’s when you realize that simplicity holds an inexplicable beauty 😍✨.

We made our way up the trail little by little, chatting, taking breaks when we needed them, laughing, and each going at our own pace to avoid extreme fatigue or unnecessary scares. Once we reached the first rest stop at the top of the little mountain, we took the opportunity to take photos with a huge Venezuelan flag, check out the zip-line station waiting for us on the way down 😂, and catch our breath for what was to come. After about 20–25 minutes, we had already arrived at the Musui hot springs 🫠.

These hot springs are a little different because the water doesn’t contain sulfur—it comes from a waterfall cascading down the rocks, which creates the pools. That’s why it doesn’t smell bad, and the temperature varies depending on how close you are to the waterfall, since the falling water tends to be almost boiling hot. It’s really interesting.

There were quite a few people there 😂—I didn’t like that very much. But anyway, we didn’t stay very long either, since the recommended time is an hour and a half because of the temperature and all the physiological effects the heat causes, so after an hour it was time to head back.

Going down was obviously the same process on the trail, except that the return trip always tends to be easier, haha, and the difference this time was that we weren’t going to hike down the mountain—we were going to zip-line down 😁. I love adrenaline-pumping activities like that, and I’m a firm believer that you absolutely have to try these kinds of experiences. We had to wait a few minutes because they didn’t have all the equipment for everyone there, so they had to go get it. After 20 minutes, they finally started getting us ready with our harnesses, helmets, and the confidence that the guy was instilling in us so we wouldn’t regret it 😂.

I can’t even begin to explain how amazing that experience was. While I was up in the tower waiting to be launched, all I could think was, “There’s no turning back now 😂,” but once they sent me flying like a worthless object, I felt an adrenaline rush that I absolutely loved—combined with the wind in my face and the view—it was definitely an experience I’d do a thousand times over.

In the end, we had to hike down just a little bit from the other mountain we’d reached to get back to the starting point where the bus would pick us up. And that’s how a wonderful outing—both on the water and on the zip line—came to an end ✨.

By then we were absolutely starving, and it was time to go have lunch. But first, we had to stop by the inn to change our clothes since we were really dirty and covered in dirt 😂. Once we were all changed and looking good, haha, it was time to head to the municipal market to eat and buy souvenirs—like the sweets you always find in the Andean regions, such as milk-filled ones, glazed ones, jam-filled ones, and the famous “aliados”.... Anyway, a whole bunch of little treats and sweets that drive you crazy and make you walk out with a huge bag full of stuff 😂.

Then we went to eat because we were seriously starving, so we went to a place that never disappoints no matter where you are: a hot dog stand 🙂. I’m not a fan and usually don’t like them, but I was so hungry that I swear they were the best hot dogs of my entire life.

Once our bellies were full and our hearts were happy 😂, it was time to head back to the inn to rest because it really had been a very, very busy day.
