Good habits look small, but they add up. I used to think that to improve my life, I had to change everything at once. Lately I've learned that one small habit, done consistently, can do more than a big plan I drop after three days.
The habit I'm working on right now is waking up early.
As a teacher, my mornings used to be rushed. I would wake up late, run around the house, and get to school already tired and stressed. By the time I reached the classroom, I felt like I was already behind. That is not a good way to start a day when you are standing in front of little children who need your full energy.
So I made one small change. I now set my alarm about thirty minutes earlier than usual. I didn't jump to 4am or anything dramatic. Just thirty minutes. In that time I drink water, pray, plan my day, and sometimes read a little before the house gets busy.
The difference has been surprising. I feel calmer. I remember things I would normally forget, like my lesson notes and the little things I need to bring to class. I even have time to think about my blog and what I want to write about. Those quiet minutes have become mine.
It has not been perfect. Some mornings the bed is too sweet to wake from, and I would snooze the alarm like everyone else. But I've decided not to be hard on myself when that happens. I just try again the next morning. A habit is built by returning to it, and not by never missing a day.
So if you are also trying to build a habit, here is how you can do progress.
Firstly you have to start small. Thirty minutes is easier than two hours, also make it simple and clear, so you know exactly what you are doing, and most importantly be patient with yourself when you slip.
As for the small change I can make today, it is to prepare the night before. I will lay out my clothes, arrange my bag, and sleep at a reasonable time. A good morning starts the night before, and I'm learning that more and more.
I'm still a work in progress, and that's okay. Over time, I believe these small efforts will become part of my daily routine and improve my life in ways I can't see yet.
