Why it's necessary to engage in a this dreaded exercise, clearing weeds off our rice farms.

Hello Hive

This rice weeding exercise is usually a nightmare for me. But since rice is the major crops we eat, we have to endure this inconvenience. The weeding may last about a week or two and harvest is will come as a reward for all this labour. If all things go well and my rice has a maximum production, I may end up growing some food that will last my family for up to 8months. The rice grains and other foods we have grown should last us for that duration. I am desperately hopeful that these will do well.

A beautiful morning to us all and welcome to a new day. I feel so tired and exhausted and really wish that I can get some more rest but there is absolutely no time for that now. There is work to be done and it has to be done on time because of the present condition of our rice farms.

Now that our rice plants are beginning to bear their grains we have to start and conclude the weeding in the farm as soon as possible. It won't be any more convinient to continue working in the farm when they are already bearing their grains. Rice plants that are already bearing grains shouldn't be disturbed by wind, humans or animal.

This wedding that we are doing is very important for the rice plant. It helps to keep the farm clean enough. Rice plants are one of the crops that are mostly attacked by rodents. They cut the plants from the root and damage as much of the crops as possible. Rodents find it very easy to damage more rice plants than any other crops. I don't see them attacking beans much unless they want to feed on the pods but for rice plant we will soon start seeing rodent built houses in the farms if this weeding is not done. In the same way that humans build houses with grasses and leaves these rodents do so with our rice plants.

The grasses in the rice farms at this time will not necessarily affect the growth of the crops since they are already producing their foods. But in order to avoid damages causes by rodents and to make our harvesting exercises much easier we chose to do this.

And also whenever rice fields are full of grasses during harvest, it makes it very very difficult to harvest our crops. It is often usually difficult to pick and cut out only the rice crops as it would require a lot of sorting. Cuttibg and threashing the rice plants along with this grasses is a tedious work hence we find our way around it.

The rains are finally giving way and some parts of our rice plants are yet to enter this food production stage. I hope that they do so and on time because it will be painful if this farm doesn't produce anything at the end of all these stressful work.

The rodent warning is real – they do build their “houses” in rice fields as you described. That always surprises me, I never thought of it that way. That is amazing that your farm feeds your family for 8 months. That is real self-reliance. How many acres are we talking on this?
