Rangoon Creeper (Combretum indicum)

Latin Name Observation Date Location
Combretum indicum Sep 05, 2026 Natore, Bangladesh

Scientific Name: In the scientific world, this creeping plant is known as Combretum indicum. Its old scientific name was Quisqualis indica, but currently, it is included in the Combretum genus. In English, they are generally called Rangoon creeper or Burma creeper. Family and Genus: According to the classification of the plant kingdom, it belongs to the family Combretaceae of the order Myrtales. It is a beautiful species of the genus Combretum.

Origin and Habitat: Their native home is the tropical Asia region. They are naturally seen growing in the forests, bushes, and along river banks of the Indian subcontinent, Malaysia, and the Philippines. Later, for beautification, it has been planted in various tropical regions including Bangladesh.

Food: The seeds or fruits of this tree were traditionally used in ancient times to suppress various parasitic worms. Besides, the plant absorbs necessary nutrition and watery elements from the soil to carry out its own growth and bloom flowers.

Reproduction: In suitable weather and soil, new seedlings of them are easily seen growing through planting tree branches or cuttings and naturally from seeds. Through tender branches and vines, they quickly spread by wrapping around surrounding trellises or trees.

Benefits: For increasing the beauty of the house and decorating the garden, this is an excellent creeping flower plant. The variety of color changes of its flowers helps to protect the balance of nature by attracting bees, butterflies, and various kinds of pollinating insects.

Harmful Aspects: Generally, there is no harmful aspect of it for humans, but since its seeds contain some chemical components, consuming them in excess can be toxic. If it grows excessively in the garden, if not pruned regularly, it can cover other trees.

I learned about them from various sites including iNaturalist, Wikipedia and Google.
