In the late ’90s, with the release of Scream, the question “What’s your favorite horror movie?” led to the revelation (for me) of a major spoiler regarding the Friday the 13th franchise; it was precisely that information—along with everything that the slasher film that revitalized the genre at that time represents—that motivated me to watch that horror classic that kicked off the franchise about a killer who hides in the woods, hunting down his victims one by one. Time has passed, and now that story is being retold in a new format; I’m referring to Crystal Lake, an A24 original TV series whose first season consists of eight episodes and serves as a prequel to Friday the 13th (1980). This series delves deeper into the story of “Pamela Voorhees,” chronicling her life as a single mother and cook at Crystal Lake Camp, who loses absolutely everything in a single day when her son, “Jason,” vanishes after supposedly drowning in the camp’s lake; It is precisely her grief over the loss of her only son that will cause the mask she has worn for so many years to slip, revealing her violent and deadly true nature.
Personally, I wasn't all that excited about this series, even though I'm a fan of the franchise and believe that from the first through the fourth film, they did a decent job with it—even though the franchise quickly lost its luster. As is usually the case, most slasher films rely on the killer’s motive or motives, and in this instance, the motive from the first film struck me as more than understandable or reasonable (according to the killer’s twisted mind) to justify his actions—both in the past and at the time the film takes place. That’s why delving into the development of that motive seemed excessive to me, but to my surprise, this series not only delves deeper into the main protagonist of the first film but also into the iconic character who won over fans in just a few minutes of screen time in that film and who later took the lead in the franchise’s subsequent films.
The first episode is pretty good—it makes excellent use of fan service, has a good pace, is fairly straightforward, and, rather than simply introducing the main characters, it reveals unknown aspects of them and lays the groundwork for the season ahead; unfortunately, that quality isn’t fully evident in the other episodes. For example, I saw the second episode as mere filler, as well as some subplots involving secondary characters that—while they do help explore the main character’s madness—I think are just an excuse to stretch out a story that could have been told in fewer episodes.
Linda Cardellini's performance as “Pamela Voorhees” is one of the series’ highlights; her character exudes sweetness, understanding, and a strong protective instinct—traits typical of a mother of a special needs child—but she also displays passion, violence, determination, and a complete loss of reason when she attacks; At first, her character caught my attention because I thought she was created and developed with great care, but her importance gradually diminishes as the story unfolds. I’m sorry to see that happen because I think Cardellini gives a strong performance, but in the end, her character in this story may simply be remembered as “Jason’s Mom.”
Although I wasn’t convinced by the decision to delve into the origins of a character who is known for simply killing without any rational motive, I think that this time around, both the backstory they gave to the character of “Pam Voorhees” and the (supposed) true origin of “Jason” didn’t bother me at all. The issue that still doesn’t sit right with me is the one I mentioned earlier: taking away the central role from a character who has a motive for leaving a trail of corpses at a recreational camp. I’ve held that opinion ever since I saw the season finale, which is good and on par with what we saw in the first episode, but I think it radically changes what we saw in the first film, released over 40 years ago. With all that said, Crystal Lake was an entertaining production, very well directed, and featuring a strong performance by its lead; I’d also add that the deaths are graphic, violent, and numerous, and this is a version of Jason that, of course, resembles his first appearance in the franchise—which I think appealed to die-hard fans. I don’t know if this series will have another season, but if it does, I hope they can resolve some narrative issues—mostly by tying up loose ends and creating a good adaptation of what we saw in the film that launched the franchise.
