A tour of the Andrés Eloy Blanco House Museum
One thing I haven't mentioned here before is that Sucre State is the birthplace of heroes and many writers—specifically three great Venezuelan poets: José Antonio Ramos Sucre, Cruz Salmerón Acosta, and Andrés Eloy Blanco. We previously visited the house-museum of Cruz Salmerón Acosta in Manicuare, and today we will visit the home of the "Great Poet of the People," as Andrés Eloy Blanco is known.
This house is located right in the center of the city of Cumaná, specifically near the Sucre State Government building and facing Plaza Bolívar. It is a colonial-style house built in the late 19th century; although it has undergone several restorations, it retains the architectural style typical of that era, featuring large windows, high ceilings, an entrance hall, and an interior courtyard.
Inside, you can also find antique furnishings. While many of these pieces did not belong to the poet himself—having been donated by others—they serve to recreate the décor, customs, and lifestyle of that time. Many of the objects are unfamiliar to newer generations, which underscores their importance to Venezuelan memory and history.
Each of the spaces is decorated with antique objects. For instance, in the master bedroom, the bed and furniture feature a colonial design. The same applies to the kitchen, which retains utensils such as clay, earthenware, and iron vessels; it also includes traditional food preparation items like the pilón (mortar)—used for crushing grains—and pitchers, which served to store liquids.
One of the house's most striking and frequently visited areas is the library, which houses thousands of books available for anyone to consult. Moreover, this space serves not only for research and reading but also hosts classes, workshops, and other small-scale events.
Visiting Andrés Eloy Blanco’s birthplace allows you to appreciate the immense effort the foundation managing the house puts into preserving the poet’s legacy and supporting regional culture. That is why guided tours are offered and the house remains open to the public—and you can enter free of charge.

As a house museum, it contains elements that speak to the history of an era, but also many personal items belonging to the poet. The walls are lined with photographs documenting Andrés Eloy’s family, political, and professional life. There are also reproductions of poems, letters, and awards he received as both a poet and a politician—for it must be said that Andrés E. Blanco was one of the most brilliant politicians of the last century and one of the founding fathers of Venezuelan democracy.
On the day we visited, a main event was taking place at the house. These weekly gatherings are part of the monthly programming offered by the venue. Ranging from literary and social to educational, these events generally take place in the interior courtyard, a space that delights with its ventilation, natural light, and perfect harmony with nature.

Given that Cumaná is a very hot city year-round, this patio is not only visually appealing but also perfect for airing out the house and making scheduled activities more pleasant.
At the entrance to the house stands a cement and plaster sculpture of the poet; it welcomes and bids farewell to visitors and serves as the perfect spot for photos and keepsakes. There, my nieces—a young girl and a teenager—and I posed beside the sculpture. The visit was rewarding, productive, and enriching. Without a doubt, it is a place that anyone visiting Cumaná should see.
