Mochima: Land of Many Waters
Last week, as summer vacation was ending in Venezuela and many children were returning to school, we decided to go to Mochima with our youngest niece. We chose the town of Mochima because it is home to the most beautiful beaches in Sucre state—and indeed some of the best in all of Venezuela. Since there were only a few of us, we took the family car, so we didn't need to use public transportation. We did, however, fill the tank with 30 liters of gasoline, which cost us $10.
The drive from Cumaná to Mochima takes approximately 30 minutes, depending on your speed and traffic conditions. The scenery is among the most beautiful in the area, as the road offers views of the sea shifting from deep blue to a lighter azure. However, the road is very winding and is a major route for semi-trucks and heavy transport vehicles, so you need to stay alert and drive carefully.
When we arrived in Mochima, we realized the town was packed with tourists and had to wait for our boatman to take us to our beach—in this case, Las Maritas—since it was one of the nearest options and was shallow with calm waters.
Without wasting any time, we began our photo session. Naturally, we had to take photos at the famous sign for the town of Mochima—a name that, in the language of the Cumanagoto people, means "land of many waters."
After that, our boatman arrived, and we were able to board the boat. One of the first things you should do upon arriving in Mochima is register and hire a boatman to take you to the beach of your choice. In our case, the boatman was a friend of ours, and he charged us $40 for the round trip to Playa Las Maritas. The trip from the town to this beach—one of the closest ones—takes about 10 minutes.
When we arrived at the beach, we realized there was quite a crowd—people who, I imagine, were—like us—making the most of the final days of summer vacation. We were lucky enough to find a canopy—which cost us $15—where we could take shelter from the sun. From there, we watched as hundreds of boats arrived and the beach became increasingly packed with people.
Without wasting any time, we got into the sea. The water was delightful—perfect. The children played and kept each other entertained. We adults watched closely. My niece spent a little while with us, but then she went into the water; since it is shallow, it is safe for children, though you always have to keep an eye on them because you never know.
Naturally, I took the opportunity to snap a few photos in my new swimsuit, which my eldest niece crocheted and gave me. She’s a whiz with a crochet hook and makes everything—from swimsuits, tops, dresses, and skirts to baby clothes. I took the photos and sent them to her so she could see how it looked on me.
Another thing we did—and that you can do at this beach—is enjoy some delicious food. We ordered from the menu; while there are plenty of seafood dishes, chicken is available too. I ordered an asopado (a seafood stew) for $15, and my family members ordered fish and fish fingers. There is also a cocktail area; we ordered cocadas (coconut shakes) and piña coladas, both of which were delicious.
Before we knew it, the beach was packed with people. At one point, people began engaging in activities and competitions, and crowds gathered around the games. It was no longer just Mochima—"Land of Many Waters"—but Mochima, a place of many people.
Late in the afternoon, the beach began to empty out. People gradually left, leaving the beach deserted. A few boats waited for those taking their last swim of the summer. It was undoubtedly a unique day—one the children enjoyed the most, as they were heading back to school that week. Mochima will always be a place to return to for rest, even when it is crowded.
