O bueno, debería llamarlos fanáticos del cine, pero aquí se puede contar ambas cosas ya que estoy por hablarles de un largometraje animado y moderno que he visto este año y que me ha fascinado bastante. Ya sea por su mezcla de ciencia ficción, fantasía, comedia y drama, como también por su excelente y melodramática historia. Plot
The film begins by introducing us to Iroha Sakayori, a high school student who lives alone in an apartment while attending classes, going to tutoring sessions, and working full-time. Iroha tries to balance her work and school responsibilities so she can set aside some time in the evenings to “play” in Tsukuyomi, a virtual world where she logs in to see her friends, play games, and participate in various events and concerts featuring her favorite idol: Yachiyo Runami (an AI and the administrator of Tsukuyomi). One night, on her way back to her apartment, Iroha comes across a streetlight glowing incandescently, and a baby emerges from inside it.

I’ve seen very few movies and anime in my life, with the exception of a fairly long list of films produced by a single studio—namely Studios Ghibli—but other than that, I’ve seen very few. However, this doesn’t mean I don’t enjoy watching them; it’s just that I don’t know where to start. I mostly stick to watching what catches my eye or is related to an anime I’ve already seen—as was the case with Demon Slayer, whose movie I watched (almost a year after its release) when it came out on streaming platforms because I was already familiar with the anime.
But in the case of “Cosmic Princess Kaguya!”, I decided to take a “chance” and watch it based solely on what I’d read and heard about it on social media when it premiered on Netflix earlier this year. At the time, I was intrigued by its curious blend of science fiction and comedy, plus the fact that its plot is partially based on a classic Japanese folktale. Or at least, that’s what I thought at first, but when I actually watched it, I was really struck by the combination of elements in this movie.
Son muy contadas las películas/anime que he visto en mi vida, exceptuando una lista no pequeña de películas que han sido producidas por un solo estudio como lo es Studios Ghibli, de resto son muy pocas las películas que he visto. Sin embargo, esto no significa que no me guste hacerlo, simplemente que no sé por dónde empezar. Me limito mucho a ver lo que me llame la atención o tenga alguna relación con un anime que ya haya visto, como lo es el caso de Demon Slayer que vi su película (casi un año después de haberse estrenado) cuando salió en plataformas digitales porque ya conocía el anime.
Pero con el caso de “Cosmic Princess Kaguya!” decidí tomarme el “riesgo” de verla solamente por lo que leía y escuchaba de ella en redes sociales cuando se emitió en Netflix a principios de este año. En su momento me llamó la atención que tiene una mezcla curiosa de ciencia ficción y comedia, además de que su trama está parcialmente relacionada con un cuento clásico de Japón. O bueno, eso era lo que pensaba al principio, pero cuando lo llegué a ver me impactó mucho la combinación de elementos que tiene esta película.

At times, it feels like a fantastic, modern story, but on the other hand, it’s also a one-of-a-kind blend of science fiction, comedy, action, and drama. Oh, not to mention that it’s also a musical—yes, what they came up with here is completely crazy, but I still really like it. For those of us on this side of the world, it’s normal not to be familiar with the classic Japanese folktale on which this movie is based. But in short, “The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter” is about an elderly couple who find a baby inside a bamboo stalk, raise her, and later discover that she is a goddess named Kaguya.
In this case, instead of an elderly couple, it’s a high school girl living independently from her parents who finds a baby inside a glowing lamppost in the middle of the night. From this point on, the premise of this film bears some resemblance to the classic tale, though with certain changes that are, to say the least, noteworthy. One thing that catches my attention is the virtual world called Tsukuyomi, where Iroha and the young Kaguya travel and have fun. There, they meet the great Yachiyo Runami, who invites them to a tournament.
Por un momento pasa de ser una historia fantástica y moderna, pero por otro lado también es una mezcla de ciencia ficción con comedia, acción y drama que no tiene igual. Ah, eso sin mencionar que también es un musical, si, una completa locura lo que se inventaron acá, pero igual y me gusta mucho. Los que somos de este lado del mundo es normal que no conozcamos el cuento clásico japonés del cual se basa esta película. Pero en resumen, “The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter” trata de una pareja de ancianos que se encuentran con un bebé en un bambú que luego crían y se enteran más tarde de que es una diosa llamada Kaguya.
En este caso, en vez de ser una pareja de ancianos, es una adolescente de secundaria que vive de forma independiente de sus padres quien se encuentra con un bebé en un poste de luz brillante en plena noche. A partir de aquí la premisa de esta película posee cierta similitud al cuento clásico, solo que con ciertos cambios que son por lo menos destacables. Algo que me llama la atención es el mundo virtual al cual llaman Tsukuyomi donde Iroha y la joven Kaguya viajan y se divierten. Allí conocen a la gran Yachiyo Runami quien las invita a un torneo.

I’m not going to lie to you when I say that I found the movie largely entertaining. At least the first half of it, where we get to see the whole adventure Iroha and Kaguya have in Tsukuyomi, their efforts to become streamers and thus participate in Yachiyo’s tournament, and the relationship the two of them gradually develop along the way. I like how they redefine certain elements of the classic tale with modern concepts like virtual reality, streaming, AI, and social media.
Watching the magnificent Kaguya transform into a rising star—fun, hyperactive, and creative—is entertaining, at least for me. But that’s not all; there are also action-packed moments during the tournament and even afterward. There are also certain plot twists that not only blew my mind but completely changed my entire perspective on this story from the very beginning. But anyway, obviously I’m not going to talk about that so as not to spoil it for you. I’ll just say that this movie really knows how to keep you hooked from start to finish, without letting up for a single moment.
No voy a mentirles cuando les digo que la película se me hizo entretenida en gran medida. Al menos lo que es la primera mitad de la misma donde llegamos a ver toda la aventura que tienen Iroha con Kaguya en Tsukuyomi, sus esfuerzos por volverse Streamers y así participar en el torneo de Yachiyo y la relación que poco a poco van desarrollando ambas durante el trayecto. Me gusta cómo redefinen ciertas cosas del clásico cuento con cosas modernas como lo es la realidad virtual, el streaming, las IAs y las redes sociales.
Convertir a la grandiosa Kaguya en una streamer en ascenso, divertida, hiperactiva y creativa es entretenido de ver, al menos para mí. Pero no solo tenemos esto, sino que también tenemos momentos repletos de acción durante el torneo o incluso después. También tenemos ciertos giros de trama que no solo me volaron la cabeza, sino que cambiaron toda la visión que uno tenía de esta historia desde un principio. Pero bueno, obviamente no pienso hablar de esto para no darles spoilers. Solo les diré que está película sabe muy bien cómo hacer que te quedes a verla de principio a fin, sin parar en ningún momento.

No matter how shocking the film’s plot twist may be, it doesn’t end up being too dense or complicated to follow—quite the opposite, in fact. Instead of confusing or overwhelming the viewer, it actually gives greater significance and influence to a certain supporting character we come to know, eventually turning that character into a major protagonist central to the plot. And while it’s billed as an unexpected plot twist, that’s not entirely true, since the clues become apparent at a certain point in the film.
For example, the name of the virtual world where much of the action takes place (Tsukuyomi), Yachiyo Runami’s inexplicable interest in Iroha and Kaguya at the beginning of the film, and the convenient support they receive from her to help them win the tournament she organizes on a certain date are all sufficient evidence that everything was more premeditated than anyone would think. Of course, this doesn’t mean the story doesn’t have certain tropes or clichés, such as its long-awaited yet somewhat convenient ending, but nothing that completely ruins the experience of watching this movie.
A pesar de lo impactante que sea dicho giro de trama que tiene la película, no termina siendo demasiado denso y complicado de seguir, sino todo lo contrario. En vez de complicar o confundir al espectador, lo que hacen es darnos más valor e influencia a cierto personaje secundario que llegamos a conocer y convertirlo luego en un personaje principal e importante para la trama. Y de que sea un giro de trama inesperado tampoco es tan cierto del todo ya que las señales se pueden prever desde cierto momento de la película.
Por ejemplo, el nombre del mundo virtual donde ocurre gran parte de los acontecimientos (Tsukuyomi), el inexplicable interés de Yachiyo Runami por Iroha y Kaguya al principio de la película y el conveniente apoyo que reciben por parte de ella para así poder ganar el torneo que organiza en cierta fecha son suficientes pruebas de que todo fue más premeditado de lo que cualquiera pensaría. Claro, esto no quiere decir que la historia no cuente con ciertos tropos o clichés como su final tan esperado y a la vez medio conveniente, pero nada que arruine por completo la experiencia de ver esta película.

Another thing I really liked about this movie is the deep and meaningful relationship between Iroha and Kaguya. At first, they seemed like mother and daughter, but then that relationship deepens to the point where they become much more than just friends. The idea that this story is described as a kind of “yuri” doesn’t really convince me, since at almost no point in the movie do we see them have that kind of relationship. Everything we see here is as innocent as possible, considering the variety of characters we meet in this movie.
Personally, I like to see the relationship between the two protagonists as a friendship that transcends the barriers of reality and time, and everything we see in these nearly two and a half hours of film is proof of that. I like Iroha’s responsible, mature, and cool personality and how it contrasts so well with Kaguya’s cheerful, fun, and hyperactive personality. I also really like Yachiyo Runami and how interesting she becomes up to a certain point in the movie. I admit that her character development isn’t particularly deep or complex, but that plot twist at the end really grabs your attention.
Otra cosa que me gustó mucho de esta película es la relación tan profunda y significativa que tienen Iroha con Kaguya. En un principio parecían como si fueran madre e hija, pero luego dicha relación se va intensificando hasta tal punto de ser mucho más que amigas. El hecho de pensar que describen está historia como una especie de “yuri” no me convence demasiado ya que en casi ningún momento de la película vemos que tengan una relación de ese estilo. Todo lo que vemos aquí es de lo más inocente posible, tomando en cuenta la variedad de personajes que conocemos en esta película.
Personalmente me gusta ver dicha relación que tienen ambas protagonistas como una amistad que trasciende las barreras de la realidad y el tiempo y todo lo que vemos en estas casi dos horas y media de película es una prueba de ello. Me gusta la personalidad responsable, madura y fría de Iroha y cómo ésta contrasta tan bien con la personalidad tan alegre, divertida e hiperactiva de Kaguya. También me agrada mucho Yachiyo Runami y lo interesante que llega a volverse hasta cierta parte de la película. Admito que no tiene un desarrollo de lo más denso o profundo, pero ese giro de trama al final sí que llama la atención.

The movie can convey various messages and lessons to us if we look at its story with a certain perspective. For example, I don’t know what the classic tale is trying to convey, but I like this modern, futuristic version of it because it shows us the importance of maintaining our friendships and sacrificing whatever it takes to fulfill our dreams. We also see the classic theme of society seeking to escape reality repeated once again, as people spend all their time immersed in Tsukuyomi, where they can be whatever they want. Clearly, there’s also a message here about never giving up on your dreams, but keeping your eyes open to reality.
But anyway, let’s talk now about what surely caught my attention more than anything else: the animation and the excellent audiovisual production in Cosmic Princess Kaguya! You can tell just by watching the first few minutes that the studios behind this feature film did a spectacular job. The animation style, the character design, the bright and varied color palette, the use of light and shadow, and the film’s diverse shots are simply marvelous. We can also appreciate a fluidity and level of detail in this film that is truly worth studying.
La película nos puede llegar a transmitir diversos mensajes y lecciones si le prestamos atención a su historia con ciertos ojos. Por ejemplo, no sé qué es lo que busca transmitirnos el cuento clásico, pero esta versión moderna y futurista de la misma me gusta porque logra demostrarnos la importancia de mantener nuestras amistades y sacrificar lo que sea por cumplir con nuestros sueños. También notamos cómo se nos repite de nuevo el clásico hecho de la sociedad buscando escapar de la realidad al estar todo el tiempo metidos en Tsukuyomi donde pueden ser lo que quieran. Está claro que hay también un mensaje ahí de no dejar de soñar, pero con los ojos abiertos ante la realidad.
Pero bueno, hablemos ahora de lo que seguramente es lo que me llamó mucho la atención, antes que cualquier otra cosa y es la animación y excelente producción audiovisual que tiene Cosmic Princess Kaguya! Podemos apreciar que los estudios a cargo de este largometraje hicieron un trabajo espectacular con tan solo ver sus primeros minutos. El estilo de animación, el diseño de los personajes, la paleta brillante y variada de colores, el uso de luces y sombras y los diferentes planos que tiene esta película es una maravilla. También podemos apreciar una fluidez y nivel de detalles que es digno de estudio en esta película.

The visual effects—both practical and computer-generated—are equally impressive. What I like most is that they didn’t rely too heavily on CGI in Tsukuyomi’s virtual world, using the same excuse others often give—that it’s “virtual” or a “video game”—but instead opted for a perfect blend of both animation styles. Perfectly computer-designed environments and hand-drawn characters with special effects that will captivate anyone. The same goes for the sound effects, although these are always overshadowed by the film’s excellent soundtrack, which has a very pop style and a modern beat.
Personally, I give it a 9/10 rating in the fantasy, science fiction, comedy, and drama genres.
Los efectos visuales tanto prácticos como hechos por computadora tampoco se quedan atrás. Lo que más me gusta es que no llegaron a depender mucho del CGI en el mundo virtual de Tsukuyomi con la mera excusa que ponen los demás de que es “virtual” o que es un “videojuego”, sino que recurrieron a una combinación perfecta de ambos estilos de animación. Entornos perfectamente diseñados a computadora y personajes dibujados a mano con efectos especiales que fascinan a cualquiera. Lo mismo ocurre con los efectos de sonido, aunque estos siempre terminan siendo opacados por la excelente banda sonora que tiene la película, muy al estilo pop y con un ritmo muy moderno.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 9/10 en lo que respecta al género de fantasía, ciencia ficción, comedia y drama.
