Hello, anime and horror fans. Tonight I wanted to bring you a somewhat special review for this “Month of Horror” special that I’ve been sharing with you over the past few weeks. Since it’s already Halloween month, I couldn’t think of a better time to focus on pure horror with an anime—something I haven’t done in quite a while. This time, I’m bringing you a modern animated gem of horror and science fiction. Based on the manga series of the same name written and illustrated by Hitoshi Iwaaki, Parasyte is an animated adaptation produced by the famous Madhouse studio. Discover the anime about the boy with the talking arm.

Plot

The anime begins by showing us a view of Earth from space as we watch various objects float down from the sky in the middle of the night toward the big city of Tokyo. Then we see our protagonist wake up in the morning, completely confused and with his right arm feeling a little numb. Our protagonist’s name is Shinichi Izumi, and he’s a high school student who lives a quiet life with his parents. His morning is typical: he gets ready, eats breakfast, talks to his parents, and heads to school. However, on his way home, we see him try to save a little girl who has crossed the street on a red light, and he manages to stop the car with his bare hand.

Trama

The last time I included anime reviews in this “Month of Horror” special was in 2024, and it was an unforgettable experience. I’m a huge fan of horror, just as I’ve become a huge fan of anime lately, and combining the two is one of the best things that’s ever happened to me. Back then, I shared some fascinating anime titles that I 100% recommend for anyone looking to watch something scary. So, to maintain that level of quality this year, I decided to make a list of other horror anime I haven’t seen yet so I could watch them and review them with you this month. That’s how I ended up watching the anime I’m sharing with you tonight.

Before watching it, I already knew a bit about Parasyte because of how popular it became a decade ago when it first aired. I was always drawn to both its premise and its fascinating animation, and I always tried to find the perfect opportunity to watch it and give it a well-deserved review. With the summer season having just ended, I decided to take my time and watch all 24 episodes of this anime in a row. After watching it, I was left with an existential void and some reflections on what is supposed to make us human.

While the anime is primarily known for its excellent animation and graphic scenes filled with body horror, it actually has a plot and narrative that are fascinating because of their psychological and philosophical impact. To avoid giving away too many spoilers, I’ll just tell you that the anime is about the life of our young protagonist, Shinichi Izumi, who one night had a worm-like organism try to invade his brain—but since he was wearing headphones, it couldn’t succeed, and before he knew it, the alien organism took over his right arm.

What happens with these organisms is that, in addition to invading, they replace that part of the body and take complete control of it in an attempt to mimic a human. The origin of these organisms is a complete mystery, as is their purpose and objective. Obviously, the one that invaded our protagonist’s arm isn’t the only alien organism out there, and in this Land of the Rising Sun, cases are beginning to emerge of bodies being dismembered and turned into “ground meat.” We also see that these beings, once they manage to invade human bodies, try to learn from human society itself.

But they are apparently intelligent beings, since we later see how the organism in Shinichi Izumi’s right arm begins to take on a life of its own—even speaking—after learning the language by reading and so on, which is a sign of intelligence. However, unlike humans, these beings do not feel (or at least that’s what’s always assumed in this anime), which leads one to believe they lack the ability to feel things like empathy or love. They are individualistic beings whose sole objective is to survive, which makes their striking method of “feeding” by eating living people all the more remarkable.

The horror is evident in this anime because of what I just mentioned, but what’s interesting about Parasyte is its curious similarity to classic works of the science fiction genre (especially the alien subgenre), such as Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), which has a very similar plot. However, we cannot simply compare this anime to other works in the genre because of its excellent narrative, which unfolds in a very interesting way throughout its episodes. While it’s true that it begins as a horror story filled with psychological tension, it evolves into a constant struggle over human identity.

The level of gore, grotesque scenes, deaths, and horror is excellent because they don’t overdo it. While it’s true that there are many moments where these elements steal the audience’s attention, they’re very well balanced with the psychological suspense and drama surrounding our protagonist and his struggle to survive with an invading entity in his right arm. It’s also true that the anime features many excellent action scenes, but there aren’t so many that they overshadow the entire work. Let’s remember that this isn’t a Shōnen series, but a Seinen anime, obviously. The characters are also very well developed.

Especially the protagonist, Shinichi Izumi, who starts out as the typical shy, unsociable kid at school who’s afraid of even a spider and cries over everything. But after everything that happens in the first episode, our protagonist is plunged into a spiral of traumatic moments, chases, deaths, murders, and losses that turn him into an emotionless, cold, and expressionless being. Rather than simply lacking emotion, our protagonist goes from feeling fear to feeling hatred and finally to feeling nothing at all. The anime does a great job of using the characters, situations, and plot twists to make us reflect on what truly sets humans apart from other living beings.

The dialogues (mainly between Shinichi and Migi, his invading arm) and the ongoing narrative that unfolds throughout this anime aim to make us wonder whether the protagonist is truly still human, as everyone keeps telling him he is. It also encourages us to reflect on the lack of empathy, survival, and human identity. The way a story that begins as a horror tale transforms into an action-packed thriller filled with gore and drama, only to ultimately become a work exploring such profound philosophical and psychological themes, is truly outstanding. We literally go from horror to existentialism with this anime.

I can see why it’s so highly acclaimed and well-regarded by many people I know who have been recommending this anime to me practically since it first aired. But best of all, I think, is the animation—which, as we’ve seen, is handled by Madhouse, one of the best animation studios of this century. And boy, did they do a spectacular job with this anime—you can really see the high level of quality, fluidity, and detail it boasts. The character designs, the varied color palette, the excellent use of light and shadow, and so on. The visual effects also work very well, with the exception of the CGI used to animate background characters.

The fact that they don’t shy away from depicting the various grotesque and bloody scenes in the anime is one of its best features. But what stands out the most, without a doubt, are the designs of the parasites or organisms that invade human bodies in this anime. The way their bodies and heads deform, the level of detail, the fluidity, and so on. The fact that all of this is traditionally animated and of such high quality is fascinating. The sound effects also really stand out, especially in action and gore scenes. But the soundtrack definitely holds its own here as well and manages to match the visual aspect. This is an anime I recommend 100%.

Personally, I give it a well-deserved 10/10 rating in the genres of science fiction, psychological thriller, drama, and horror.
