If I told you that I’m part of that 1% of the world’s population who has never seen this movie in my life, would you believe me? Honestly, even I’m surprised that I’ve never seen this movie before—not even as a child or a preteen. It was only a few hours ago that I finally watched it all the way through, simply because I wanted to talk about it and satisfy my curiosity about it. Just because I hadn’t seen it before doesn’t mean I’m completely unfamiliar with it. The Sixth Sense is so popular that it’s even referenced in other movies.

For example, the movie 50 First Dates references it and even shows us a couple of key scenes from it. Yes, an Adam Sandler movie spoiled the ending of one of the best suspense films of this century for me. But anyway, that’s not why I didn’t get around to watching it until very recently—it’s because I was waiting for the perfect moment to do so, and well, here we are. The funny thing about this movie is that it also suffered from a misunderstanding among audiences, who considered it a “horror movie,” when in reality it only features suspense and supernatural elements.

It’s true that it has some jump scares—moments when fear can really take hold of you and all that—but this is mostly because the film itself is so well-produced that we feel all the dread and fear our young protagonist experiences. But if we watch the entire movie and better understand its story from beginning to end, we’ll notice that it offers a very different narrative from what one would normally expect from a horror movie as such. There are no monsters or beings from the underworld here who are only out to torment and murder people—no.

What we see here is a supernatural world intertwined with the real world, with beings wandering here and there in search of help. The reality of this world isn’t quite as dark and disturbing as it’s portrayed in the first hour of the film. However, this shift doesn’t detract from the story’s value or horror; it simply shifts our focus to what we should truly be focusing on and considering in this story. What we should fear isn’t “the dead,” but the living—that’s right. It’s impressive to see this famous saying portrayed so well in a movie, and Mr. Shyamalan pulled it off brilliantly here.

But to explain this better, let me remind you that the movie focuses mainly on Cole Shear, a boy barely nine years old who suffers from certain social and psychological problems (supposedly), which is why our friend Malcolm Crowe, whom we met at the beginning, comes to visit him every day to help him with his issues. However, Cole is convinced at first that Malcolm can’t help him with what he’s going through, so he avoids him all the time. Over time, our psychologist manages to gradually get closer to Cole, and Cole tells him his secret. This secret not only reveals a different perspective that our young protagonist has on his daily life,

but it also indirectly introduces the idea that Malcolm Crowe is still alive after the incident that occurred at the beginning of the film. I can’t tell you any more, since there may be others here in the community who, like me, haven’t seen this famous suspense classic in their lives. Considering that a nine-year-old boy spends his time suffering from visits and constant paranormal encounters with entities that, at first, instill terror and fear, this is something to take seriously.

Cole Shear may be one of the most mature and intelligent child protagonists we’ve ever met, given everything he goes through every day—not to mention his problems at home and at school. But I don’t want to focus on that; rather, I want to focus on what we mentioned earlier about the true horror of this world that simulates reality, but with supernatural entities posing as real people who don’t know they’re actually dead. I’m talking about humanity itself—the very thing that has caused these spirits to wander the world in search of revenge, attention, and redemption.

To avoid giving away too many spoilers while still providing an example of this, in the first half-hour we see our young protagonist discussing in one of his school classes what people were doing in that very place over a hundred years ago. Cole replies to his teacher that people were hanged there. Then we see a scene where he spots those people hanging at the entrance to a classroom. We’re talking about that infamous era in U.S. history when people of color were horrifically tortured. Likewise, there are other cases of deaths caused by real, flesh-and-blood human beings who have lived or are still living in this world.

As I mentioned in a previous review, true horror doesn’t lie in ghost stories, apparitions, or jump scares. True horror lies in human nature itself, which is willing to commit all manner of atrocities just to satisfy its desires, seek attention, or simply for some personal reason—as seen in the first murder we witness in the film’s opening. Getting back to that, the plot of this film is so closely intertwined with its entire audiovisual presentation that it’s truly impressive.

It definitely deserves all the nominations and awards it received at the time, as the work Shyamalan did with The Sixth Sense is impressive—even more so when you consider the era in which it was produced and released. But before I talk about the audiovisual aspects, I want to focus first on the performances of each member of this magnificent cast. Starting with Bruce Willis, whom we rarely saw at that time taking on roles that strayed from the typical action thrillers for which he became famous. I’m not going to say his performance was the best of all, but it wasn’t all that bad either.

On the other hand, we have the young Haley Joel Osment, who plays Cole Shear in this movie and did a spectacular job considering how young he was at the time. He really pulled off all the moments of fear, suspense, worry, and anger we see in this movie quite well, to be honest. As for the rest of the cast, they did an excellent job as well, especially the actress who played Cole’s mother. There are a few moments in this movie where the performances really shine. Especially the ending, where there’s a scene that made it impossible for me not to shed a tear.

Now, let’s get back to the excellent direction and production in this film, which is no small feat considering the era and the resources they had available. M. Night Shyamalan became known both for this film and for other movies he later directed, which became world-famous for their exceptional ability to build suspense and deliver moments of tension in a truly impressive way. The cinematography, the static shots, the camera positions, the movement styles, and the focus and camera work used here are truly remarkable.

The same goes for the bright, varied, and at times somewhat cool and dark color palette it uses. The film doesn’t overuse light and shadow to create scenes of tension or suspense. However, this changes with the use of practical visual effects to generate those moments of fear that have had such a profound impact on an entire generation. There are uncut sequences in this film that work very well. The absence of CGI is excellent, as it ensures realism from start to finish through the use of practical effects, makeup, and other techniques. The sound effects also steal some of the spotlight, but they don’t compare to what the film’s soundtrack achieves.

Personally, I give it a well-deserved rating of 9.5/10 in the psychological thriller, supernatural, drama, and mystery genres.

One of my favorite movies from ever. It has everything: thriller, emotions, scare moments, lessons, plot twist. Thank you for this review.

Excellent review, Natto! Without a doubt, an excellent film. The first time I saw it, I was amazed by the shocking ending. I always remember it, and how could I forget it? !LADY
