The Tales of Praetoria: Chapter 02 - An Unexpected Encounter [ENG/SPA]

I couldn’t keep smiling for long, because what I felt wasn’t just a rift opening up—it was Praetoria weeping. And I know what it feels like to fall into a world that isn’t your own.

Because I, too, came from another world, just like you, little one. I wasn’t born in Praetoria; I fell here a long time ago, when a rift like this swallowed me whole. That’s why the Riftwatchers accepted me. That’s why I can weave Silence. It’s not just magic—it’s denying the enemy’s power. It’s what we use against the Chaos Legion when they try to whisper through the Void. I learned to do it because, otherwise, the Void would have sent me back to the other side.

What this girl has in her chest isn’t ordinary Summoner magic: it’s Pure Rift Magic. The same magic that created the Great Rift after the fall of Mortis. The same magic that brought me to this world.

-“Listen to me, little one”-I said as we hurried toward the camp where Henruc and Culebro were waiting for us.

-“You weren’t summoned—you fell, just as I, too, fell.”

Buns looked at me over her glasses, gripping her spear tightly.

-“What do you mean?”-Jolius asked.

-“I mean she isn’t from this Splinter. Neither from Unity nor from Chaos. Her magic doesn’t use mana; she is the key. The red-eyed monsters that attacked us weren’t savages. They were Shadowhunters, beasts of the Void sent by the Legion to track unstable rifts. That’s why they could smell her from kilometers away. That’s why they could smell me, too, the first time.”

The girl clutched her chest, where her light was pulsing ever more strongly.

-"That’s why your Void Armor was able to stop them, Bun,"-I told her-"Your armor doesn’t block normal magic—it blocks the Void. You’re a natural Riftwatcher, even though you didn’t know it."

We reached the hill and saw it. The camp on our plots of land. Henruc was standing next to Culebro. Culebro, in his massive armor and bearing the scars of so many battles against the Legion, had his sword planted in the ground. They were staring at the center of the camp.

There it was: The Rift.

It wasn’t the small portal that Jolius thought had brought her here. It was an open wound in the air—purple, black, and blue—spinning like an eye. And from the other side, a roar could be heard.

-“Oh no”-whispered Ember.

-“It’s coming”-I exclaimed-“It’s a Doctor Blight—or something worse. Something the Legion sent to secure this rift and bring the rest. If it crosses, Praetoria falls—and so do our lands.”

I turned to the girl. The only one who could close it from this side.

-“We Riftwatchers close rifts from the outside. But you can open and close them from the inside. Because you were born in the space between worlds… just like me.”

I placed my hands over hers. I felt her power burn—cold and hot at the same time.

-“I’ll lend my Silence to silence what’s coming from the other side. Buns will lend his Void Armor so it doesn’t consume you. But you have to decide. Do you close it forever and stay with us on this Splinter… or do you open it to go home, knowing you might let the Legion through?

The crack pulsed. Louder. And the whole meadow fell silent, waiting for her answer. I couldn’t let her make a decision out of fear. So I told her what Buns really is.

-“Before you fell, little one, something else happened”-I said, as my Silence began to weave a circle around us-“On last night’s watch, while you slept, the swamp mist fractured.”

Everyone looked at me… even Buns did.

A wanderer passed through the trees without stopping. He wore armor with emerald runes that silenced even the dampness for a heartbeat. Behind him, a guardian spirit watched from nowhere. The mist asked in a voice like dry leaves: ‘Who was it whose gaze crossed ours in this frozen forest, in this cold realm that steals our lives?’"

"And Lenore, with her dark wings, replied sharply: ‘We’ll never see him again. It’s Buns… the one who never lets himself be seen.’"

"That is the truth about Buns, child. He has already walked among the Splinters. He has already seen forests where fire does not respond. That night, he tried to summon the fire elementals to restore warmth to the frozen animals, and his magic fizzled out like wet ash. Because a foreign magic—dense and ancient—covered everything. An eternal winter that is not winter. It is the breath of the Void. The Legion is already trying to freeze this Splinter from within, so that the Rift will open on its own.”

Buns looked down. He understood. That was why his Void Armor had reacted.

At that moment, the Rift roared. Something enormous was pushing from the other side. And then, from the center of the purple, black, and blue wound, it wasn’t a Doctor Blight that emerged: it shot out like a bullet of light.

BOOM!

It fell face-first onto the ground between us and the Rift. Small, purple, with bright pink horns and furious yellow eyes.

It got to its feet, coughing up smoke from the Void.

-"Ugh! I hate it when they summon me without warning! It ruins my nap!"

We all aimed our weapons at him, and Buns raised his spear.

The little dragon looked at us, saw the girl with the light on her chest, saw the open Rift, and understood instantly.

-"Oh! OH NO... You guys opening doors again that you don’t know how to close? Oh well, Vaelok called me."

He flapped his wings and positioned himself right in front of the girl, his green bracelets glowing.

-"I’m a Drakoshan; my clan watches over the small rifts—the ones you Riftwatchers don’t see because you’re too busy with the big ones. This rift is contaminated with Frost Magic. That’s why your fires wouldn’t light, witch"-he said, pointing at me-"It’s not that the Legion is freezing it. They’re using it as a seal!"

Vaelok spat out a purple spark—not fire, but pure shattering energy—which struck the edge of the rift, and the wound screeched.

-“If this girl closes the rift now, with that Frost Magic inside, she’ll seal eternal winter forever in this forest. And on your plots of land. They’ll remain frozen.”

The girl squeezed my hands tighter.

-“So… what do we do?”-Buns asked, for the first time with fear in his voice.

Vaelok smiled at us, revealing all his little fangs.

-“Will you let me join your team of losers with the pretty lands? You lend me your Silence and your Void Armor, and I’ll go into the Rift from the inside with her and burn the ice from the other side. Because I can fly in the Void.”

He turned to the girl.

-“What do you say, little key? Shall we close this together, and you stay with us? I have treasures in my cave.”

And the Rift pulsed again, hungrier than ever.

-"Oh no"-susurró Ember.

-"¡Oh! OH NO...
