Como introducción a uno de mis especiales favoritos que anualmente subo a mi blog, la película que les hablaré hoy parte de uno de los subgéneros más reconocidos del terror. Plot
The film begins in a hot, desolate Nevada desert, where we meet two men traveling in a pickup truck: Valentine “Val” McKee and Earl Bassett. Both work as laborers in the remote town of Perfection, where they do odd jobs like picking up trash or repairing fences. One day, they decide to leave town, but unfortunately for them, a series of strange events begins to unfold on their way there. For example, an old acquaintance is found perched on a high-voltage power pole, dead from dehydration.

Before I continue with my review of this movie, I just want to quickly clarify that I plan to temporarily put the latest comedy special with Adam Sandler on hold so I can move up the “Month of Horror” special a couple of weeks before October—the month I usually dedicate to talking exclusively about horror movies. This sudden change is due to a special contest that my dear colleague @wiseagent is hosting in this growing Scrobble Life community. And since I’m a huge fan of the horror genre, it’s a real pleasure for me to do this for your enjoyment.
Getting back to the movie, I wanted to start off on a lighthearted and somewhat entertaining note with this ’90s classic that an entire generation—my generation—grew up watching. Tremors is one of the first movies I can remember watching over and over again when I was just a kid. It’s a mix of horror, monsters, comedy, and action that, at first glance, doesn’t seem scary—and, honestly, it doesn’t set out to be scary as such. The movie is set in a small, remote town called Perfection, where strange events—such as deaths and disappearances—begin to occur.
Antes de continuar con mi reseña de esta película, solo les quiero aclarar rápidamente que pienso pausar de manera temporal el más reciente especial de comedia con Adam Sandler para así adelantar el especial “Mes del Terror” un par de semanas antes de octubre que es el mes que suelo utilizar para hablarles de puras películas de terror. Este cambio repentino se debe a un concurso especial que está realizando mi querido compañero @wiseagent en esta creciente comunidad de Scrobble Life. Y como soy muy fan del género de terror es todo un placer para mí hacer esto para el agrado de ustedes.
Volviendo con la película, quise empezar de una forma ligera y algo entretenida con este clásico de los años noventa que toda una generación -mi generación- ha crecido viéndola. Tremors es de las primeras películas que puedo llegar a recordar haber visto no pocas veces cuando apenas era un niño. Es una mezcla de terror, monstruos, comedia y acción que a simple vista no pareciera dar miedo y, honestamente, no busca hacerlo como tal. La película trata de un pequeño pueblo apartado del mundo llamado Perfection donde empiezan a ocurrir sucesos extraños como muertes y desapariciones.

Little by little, we see how the origin of all these cases comes to light—literally from the ground—as if they were giant worms crawling at high speed underground to stalk and attack people. The terror here lies in the fact that you can’t even trust where you’re standing, for fear that something will drag you down into the deepest depths of the earth and tear you to pieces in the process. What’s curious about the creatures we see in this movie is how little information we have about them. The filmmakers decided to keep the origin of the so-called Graboids a complete mystery.
Yes, they didn’t bother giving these creatures a backstory and simply used them as a narrative device to create that terror of having to walk or drive through this desolate desert with giant things crawling beneath the earth. The way they introduce them works well, as they manage to make us see the level of horror and despair you might feel with something like that chasing you when we see the dead old man impaled on the power pole at the beginning. Another thing I like about this movie is how raw it can get in certain parts.
Poco a poco vemos cómo el origen de todos estos casos sale a flote, literalmente de la tierra, como si fueran gusanos gigantes que se arrastran a una gran velocidad bajo tierra para acechar y atacar a la gente. El terror aquí radica en que no puedes llegar a confiar ni siquiera en dónde estás parado por temor de que algo te sumerja a lo más hondo del suelo y te despedace por completo en el intento. Lo curioso de estas criaturas que vemos en esta película es la poca información que tenemos de ellas. Los creadores decidieron dejar el origen de los llamados Graboides en total anonimato.
Si, no se molestaron en darle historia a estas criaturas y solo las utilizaron como un recurso narrativo para generar ese terror de tener que caminar o andar en este desierto desolado con cosas gigantes arrastrándose por debajo de la tierra. La forma en la que la introducen está bien ya que logran hacernos ver el nivel de horror y desesperación que se puede llegar a tener con algo así persiguiéndote al ver al anciano muerto montado en el poste eléctrico del principio. Otra cosa que me gusta de esta película es el nivel de crudeza que puede llegar a tener en ciertas parte de la misma.

On the other hand, something I see as a stark contrast is the humor in this movie, which is often a bit heavy-handed and absurd in certain ways. I understand that the movie aims to tell a story with little tension and horror limited to certain moments involving the worms—and not much else. But otherwise, it seems like a different kind of movie—something funnier and less dramatic than one would expect from a horror film. Still, Tremors manages to balance that humor well with the horror in a way that’s entertaining from start to finish and suitable for the whole family.
From what I’ve researched, Tremors set out to pay homage to the 1950s monster movie genre, which is why it has an aesthetic and production style so faithful to that era. Practical visual effects, somewhat creative designs and visual elements, and well-structured shots all work together to convey that tension throughout the film. The performances aren’t too bad either, though you might notice the occasional quirk in certain scenes. Kevin Bacon delivers an excellent performance, though it’s mostly limited to the typical heroic protagonist who takes risks every now and then.
Por otro lado, algo que veo como un total contraste es el humor que manejan en esta película, siendo muchas veces un tanto pesado y absurdo en ciertos sentidos. Entiendo que la película busca darnos una historia con poca tensión y terror limitado a ciertos momentos con los gusanos y poco más. Pero de resto pareciera ser una película diferente, algo más gracioso y menos dramático del que uno esperaría de una película de terror. Igualmente, Tremors logra equilibrar bien dicho humor con el terror de una forma que sea entretenida de principio a fin y para toda la familia.
Según llegué a investigar, Tremors buscó hacerle tributo al género de monstruos de los años 50 y es por eso que posee esa estética y producción tan fiel a antaño. Efectos visuales prácticos, diseños y recursos visuales un tanto creativos y planos bien estructurados que logran transmitir dicha tensión a lo largo de la película. Las actuaciones tampoco están tan mal, aunque sí se puede llegar a señalar uno que otro detalle en ciertas escenas. Kevin Bacon logra darnos una excelente actuación, aunque mayormente limitada al típico protagonista heróico que toma riesgos de vez en cuando.

The chemistry between Bacon and Fred Ward is excellent as well—at times it’s so strong that they seem like brothers or something similar. The rest of the characters also manage to stand out quite well, especially since there are so few of them in this small town in the Nevada desert. There are a few characters who manage to stand out on their own in certain action-packed scenes that I really liked. But in the end, it’s not all that great, since the movie relies heavily on tropes and moments full of the cheap clichés found in every horror movie.
Ultimately, it’s like watching a cheap horror-comedy with monsters and plenty of action scenes aimed at entertaining a broader audience. It doesn’t have the best plot or many mind-blowing twists, and the excess of comedy can actually make certain scenes feel less tense and more entertaining, to be honest. It almost feels like a parody because of the sheer number of tropes, funny jokes, Easter eggs, and references in the movie. But in the end, it’s a movie that has held up very well over the decades and has even spawned an entire franchise.
La química que tiene Bacon con Fred Ward es excelente también, a veces llevados al extremos de parecerse hermanos o algo parecido. El resto de personajes también logran destacarse muy bien, sobre todo porque son pocos al tratarse de un pequeño pueblo del desierto de Nevada. Hay uno que otro personaje que logran destacarse por sí mismos en ciertas escenas repletas de acción que me gustaron bastante. Pero al final tampoco es la gran cosa, ya que la película recurre mucho de tropos y momentos repletos de clichés baratos de toda película de terror.
Al final, es como ver una película de terror y comedia barata con monstruos y muchas escenas de acción que busca entretener a un público más general. No tiene la mejor trama ni muchos giros que te vayan a volar la cabeza y el exceso de comedia puede llegar a hacernos sentir ciertas escenas como algo menos tenso y más entretenido,la verdad. Juega con parecerse una parodia debido a la cantidad de tropos, chistes graciosos, easter eggs y referencias que tiene la película. Pero al final es una película que consiguió mantenerse muy bien con el paso de las décadas y que incluso ha creado toda una franquicia.

Given the film’s limited budget, it’s clear that it was produced primarily using practical visual effects throughout nearly its entire hour-and-a-half runtime. Despite this, I really like how well those effects have aged, giving the film that nostalgic touch. The cinematography—including the camera styles, shots, movements, and more—is among the film’s standout features. The fact that the warm color palette blends so well with the desolate, barren desert setting really works in the film’s favor.
Tremors has very few nighttime horror scenes, which is a bit of a letdown since we’re used to seeing horror movies set at night. But even so, the daytime scenes—which make up the bulk of the film—serve to rob us of the peace and tranquility of feeling “safe” simply because it’s daytime. Another thing that catches my attention is the Graboids’ fascinating design, which is also brought to life with practical effects. The film also features some somewhat grotesque scenes, but nothing out of the ordinary. The sound effects are very well done, but nothing compares to the soundtrack. A horror classic that I recommend you watch and remember.
Personally, I give it a rating of 8/10 in terms of the horror, comedy, and science fiction genres.
Debido al poco presupuesto que tenía la película, podemos notar que mayormente fue producida utilizando efectos visuales prácticos en casi toda la hora y media que dura la misma. A pesar de esto, me gusta mucho cómo llegó a envejecer tan bien dichos efectos, dándole ese toque nostálgico a la película. La fotografía, los estilos de enfoques, planos, movimientos y demás son de lo más destacados. El hecho de que la paleta de colores caliente combine muy bien con el entorno desértico y desolador sirve muy bien para la película.
Tremors tiene muy pocas escenas de terror de noche, lo cual es un poco capcioso ya que estamos acostumbrados a ver películas de terror ambientadas a noches como tal. Pero igual y las escenas durante el día que mayormente tiene la película sirven para quitarnos la paz y la tranquilidad de estar “a salvo” solamente por ser de día. Otra cosa que me llama la atención es el diseño tan interesante que tienen los Graboides, además de estar hechos también con efectos prácticos. La película también posee escenas un tanto grotescas, pero nada del otro mundo. Los efectos de sonido están muy bien hechos, pero nada como la banda sonora. Un clásico del terror que les recomiendo ver y recordar.
Personalmente, le doy una calificación de 8/10 en lo que respecta al género del terror, comedia y ciencia ficción.
