Hello, fans of good music. It’s Tuesday, the second day of the week, so that means it’s time to talk to you about music in this very special and nostalgic music section. I try to make these kinds of posts a regular part of my daily routine, but doing it just once a week makes it a little hard to keep up. I’d also like to remind you that this section exists thanks to the weekly contest hosted by our friend @ablaze in the Music community called “Three Tunes Tuesday.”
The band I’ll be talking about today is one I barely got to listen to back when I was a teenager and was just discovering everything about Rock music. This band is known as Incubus; they’re a Nu Metal and Alternative Rock band formed in 1991, but they rose to popularity in the early 2000s. Their sound has evolved over the decades, shifting from Nu Metal to Alternative Rock mixed with Pop and Electronic music.

La banda de la cual les estaré hablando hoy es una que apenas he llegado a escuchar en su momento cuando era adolescente y estaba conociendo todo lo relacionado al Rock. Esta banda es conocida por el nombre de Incubus y es una banda de Nu Metal y Rock Alternativo formada en el año 1991, pero fue popularizada a principios de los años 2000. Su sonido ha llegado a evolucionar con el paso de las décadas, pasando tocar Nü Metal al Rock Alternativo mezclado con Pop y Electrónica.

Let's start with the song that has been etched in my subconscious for over a decade and that introduced me to this Californian band. “Drive” is the third single from Incubus’s third studio album, Make Yourself (1999). The rhythm and sound of this song are very different from what we were used to hearing from the band back then—though, incidentally, they were also going through a sort of transition with this very album. “Drive” blends Post-Grunge with a catchy drum and bassline that has stood the test of time.
However, what stands out most about “Drive” is its lyrics, which speak to the struggle the narrator faces against the fear and uncertainty that the future brings. The song begins by telling us how fear has taken control of his life and his decisions. However, as the seconds pass, the protagonist gradually realizes that things can turn out better if he takes control of his own life. Then we hear the famous and unforgettable chorus that this song offers us: “Whatever tomorrow brings, I’ll be there with open arms and open eyes, yeah.”
This line is a clear sign of acceptance that, whatever tomorrow may bring, we must embrace it wholeheartedly and with open arms if we want to be happy. This can take on different meanings for each person: on the one hand, it may evoke the feeling of accepting uncertainty, fear, and doubts about the future and not dwelling too much on what lies ahead. On the other hand, it can also signify a kind of stoicism—not expecting anything from the future, whether good or bad, and accepting whatever comes our way calmly and without resistance.
Empecemos con la canción que se quedó grabada en mi subconsciente desde hace más de una década atrás y que fue la que me hizo conocer a esta banda californiana. Drive es el tercer sencillo del tercer álbum de estudio de Incubus titulado Make Yourself (1999). El ritmo y sonido que posee esta canción es muy diferente a lo que se solía escuchar de esta banda en aquel entonces, que por cierto también estaban pasando por una especie de transición con este mismo álbum. Drive mezcla el Post-Grunge con un ritmo pegajoso de batería y bajos que pasó a la posteridad.
Sin embargo, lo que más llama la atención de Drive es su letra, la cual nos habla de la lucha que tiene nuestro interlocutor contra el miedo y la incertidumbre que nos trae el futuro. La canción inicia hablándonos de cómo el miedo ha tomado control de su vida y de sus decisiones. Sin embargo, con el paso de los segundos el protagonista se da cuenta poco a poco que puede irle mejor si él mismo toma control de su vida. Luego escuchamos el famoso e inolvidable coro que nos regala esta canción: “Whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there with open arms and open eyes, yeah”.
Esta frase es una clara señal de aceptación de que, sea lo que sea que nos traiga el mañana, tenemos que aceptarla con todo gusto y con los brazos abiertos si queremos ser felices. Esto puede llegar a tener ciertos significados para cada persona, ya que por un lado puede sonar a esa sensación de aceptar la incertidumbre, el miedo y las dudas del futuro y no pensar tanto en el futuro. Mientras que por otro lado también puede llegar a significar una especie de estoicismo de no esperar nada del futuro, ya sea esto bueno o malo, y aceptar lo que sea que recibamos de forma apacible e inmutable.

Let’s continue with another great song by Incubus—a much less popular single, but just as—or even more—emotional and profound than the previous one. I’ll be honest with you: I’d never heard this one or the next single I’m going to talk about before, at least not that I can remember. But anyway, here they are on this list since there are three songs, not just one. The song I’m trying to tell you about is “Dig,” which is the second single from the California band’s sixth studio album, Light Grenades (2006).
The song has a perfect sound that blends Alternative Rock with a tempo that’s neither too fast nor too slow. The lyrics of “Dig” speak of love, but not just any kind of love or the typical love that most songs today talk about. Rather, it speaks—according to one of the band members himself—of platonic love, or the kind of love one usually feels for a friend or companion. The song reveals this through lines like: “We all have something that digs at us, at least we dig each other, so when weakness turns my ego up, I know you’ll count on me from yesterday.”
The song speaks deeply of camaraderie, teamwork, and how one person can be saved by another in moments when “the ego” consumes them. Clearly, one can relate to the lyrics of this song, since we’ve all had a friend or companion we can count on for anything. Sigamos con otra gran canción de Incubus, un sencillo mucho menos popular, pero igual o hasta más emotivo y profundo que el anterior. Les seré honesto al decirles aquí que este y el siguiente sencillo del cual les hablaré no los había escuchado nunca antes, al menos que yo recuerde. Pero bueno, aquí están en esta lista ya que son tres canciones, no una. La canción de la cual les intento hablar es Dig, el cual es el segundo sencillo del sexto álbum de estudio de la banda californiana titulado Light Grenades (2006).
La canción posee un sonido perfecto que mezcla el Rock Alternativo con un ritmo ni tan rápido ni tampoco tan lento. La letra de Dig nos habla del amor, pero no cualquier tipo de amor o el típico amor del cual habla la mayoría de canciones de hoy en día. Más bien habla -según uno de los miembros de la propia banda- del amor platónico o que uno normalmente posee con un amigo o compañero. La canción habla mucho del compañerismo, dem trabajo en equipo y cómo uno logra ser salvado por el otro en momentos en los que “el ego” los consume. Claramente uno puede llegar a sentirse identificado con la letra de esta canción ya que nosotros también hemos llegado a tener un amigo o compañero con el cual poder contar con él para lo que sea. Esa sensación de que no estás solo y que siempre que te pase algo o te llegues a desviar de tu rumbo podrás contar con la ayuda de aquella persona es algo que muy bien lo describe estq canción.

To wrap up this short list, I’d like to share another great single that’s also part of the same studio album as the previous song. Incubus managed to make the leap to an alternative sound with this album, but they also set a standard that we still remember today. “Anna Molly” is the first single from the album Light Grenades (2006); it has a very different sound from the classic Nu Metal that Incubus played on their previous albums. The song tells the story of a woman who is described as an “anomaly.”

Para finalizar esta pequeña lista les traigo otro grandioso sencillo que también forma parte del mismo álbum de estudio del cual salió la canción anterior. Incubus logró dar ese salto al sonido alternativo con este álbum, pero también logró trazar una línea que llegaríamos a recordar aún al día de hoy. Anna Molly es el primer sencillo del álbum Light Grenades (2006), posee un sonido muy diferente al clásico Nu Metal que antes tocaba Incubus en su álbumes anteriores. La canción nos habla de una mujer a la cual catalogan como “anómala”.
Es curioso lo que se habla de ella en esta canción, ya que la describe al principio como “una ciudad sobre el agua” o como “un pozo de soledad”.
