After so many years, the new Avatar series has finally premiered, the one about the four elements, not the aliens from Pandora, and its arrival caught me off guard. I had planned to review Nickelodeon’s original series, “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” and its continuation, “The Legend of Korra,” but due to a lack of free time, I haven’t been able to write my honest opinion about these masterpieces. I will do so in due time.
Review
The original series defined my childhood. Before I understood the depth of its narrative, the legend of Avatar Aang seemed wonderful to me simply because of its phenomenal animation and the way it depicted someone controlling air, water, earth, and fire. Later, during my adolescence, I watched The Legend of Korra, and although it was quite shocking for me that they changed the protagonist (because I’m an Aang fan), I realized that the Avatar’s role is meant to be passed down so that it does not belong to a single character, but rather remains a concept belonging to a magical world where people are capable of controlling one of the four essential elements of life.
This great story began with a young Air Nomad who mastered all four elements to save the world from a conqueror. He was followed by a waterbender who was a prodigy and faced enemies in order to establish a balance between two worlds—the human and the spiritual. Now… it is the turn of an earthbender, but to my surprise, it seems this will be the story of twin sisters who will share the role of the Avatar.
Two hundred and twenty-five years have passed since the events of The Legend of Korra. Apparently, the industrialized world was destroyed by a cataclysm caused by Avatar Korra before her death. It is surprising to learn that the legacy of the last Avatar seen by fans of these works is completely different from that of the other Avatars, who were worshiped and revered as saviors of the world. Now, for reasons that are still unknown, the reality of this new world is that everyone hates the Avatar.
This first episode serves as an introduction. Its task is to redefine the status quo of the known world while laying the foundations for a renewed narrative set in a post-apocalyptic environment.
Before discussing that narrative, I must honestly say that the new animation is not making a good first impression on me. The animation in the previous series was astounding because it was so fluid, and its Western style was so detailed in its sequences that many people mistook them for anime, despite being cartoons. But now it is very obvious that this is a cartoon, and the quality of the animation has declined to the point that it resembles “My Adventures with Superman.” I also notice that the humor is very present in most moments. I only hope that the serious moments are treated seriously enough to create drama, and that the comedy is not overdone.
In any case, during the first few minutes, we meet Pavi, the new Earth Kingdom incarnation of the Avatar, accompanied by her cat-lemur companion in a desert filled with sandstorms. They arrive at one of the seven havens scattered throughout the world, cities where the survivors of the cataclysm now live, descendants of the four nations. There, we meet an Air Nomad named Jae, who is apparently one of the city’s guards, in other words, a civilian protector, similar to a police officer.
Through a narrative coincidence, Jae meets the young earthbender and discovers that she can also airbend. Jae immediately informs the head of the guard about what he witnessed. However, to everyone’s surprise, including the viewer’s, it turns out that Pavi has a twin sister named Nisha who has mastered all four elements.
That is how the first episode ends, and with that final revelation, I was hooked. Avatar: Seven Havens got off to a strong start in 2026, bringing the franchise back. Apparently, the Avatar still has many fascinating stories left to tell.
Episode Trivia
The series implies that Korra died a long time ago, but according to the logic of the Avatar cycle, when an Avatar dies, the next one is born at the same time through the reincarnation cycle. What surprises me is that the twins are young girls no older than ten, so I hope this long period in which the Avatar disappeared from the face of the earth for more than two hundred years is eventually explained.
Two Avatars? Now that is something new. I never would have imagined it; in fact, I thought it was impossible. In the second book of The Legend of Korra, the origins of the Avatar were explored in depth, revealing that the Avatar was born when the primordial spirit Raava permanently fused with the soul of a human named Wan. For centuries, the ability to control all four elements has been passed down through his reincarnations. This therefore breaks the established rules of the series’ universe. I hope and wish that this is explained later on.
