[Anime] DRAGON BALL SUPER: BEERUS | EPISODE 1 | (2026) | (EN-ES) | REVIEW

Eleven years after its premiere and eight years since its last broadcast, “Dragon Ball Super” has returned to start over from the beginning. This time under a new title: “Dragon Ball Super: Beerus.” Since its announcement, doubts, complaints, and criticism have emerged regarding this remake, which aims to be a more faithful adaptation of Akira Toriyama’s work than the original series was.

I believe the Dragon Ball manga has received too many adaptations. Something similar had already happened with the memorable anime Dragon Ball Z, a ’90s classic that we all watched on television. It had more than 200 episodes across its three sagas, and for years that was the most widely watched version of DBZ. However, years later, in 2009, its remake premiered—the second version of the DBZ story, titled “Dragon Ball Z Kai.” Essentially, it was the original version remastered and edited to omit the filler scenes and show only the events seen in the original manga. That is why, unlike the first version, DBZ Kai has a total of 167 episodes.

Apparently, history is repeating itself—literally. Toei Animation decided to restart the DBS story because it had significant differences that caused it to drift away from Toriyama’s manga. This happened because the anime premiered at a time when it could not keep pace with the original work. Instead of adapting the manga, Toei Animation created story arcs on the fly and stretched the episodes longer than necessary.

But things are different now. Following Akira Toriyama’s unfortunate death, the Dragon Ball Super manga went on indefinite hiatus after completing the “Super Hero” arc. As a result, the new anime currently has nine arcs to adapt. That is a great deal of material to animate, and I assume its production is intended to give the manga’s story enough time to eventually resume, now under Toyotarou’s direction.

The adaptation of the Galactic Patrol Prisoner arc has already been confirmed, so we will have to wait a few years before finally seeing something new from the DBS story animated. Until then, we will be watching a new version of the same story that aired years ago.

Ever since this new adaptation of the DBS manga was announced, I have repeatedly wondered whether something like this is really necessary to keep marketing the Dragon Ball franchise. Its fame has an absolutely global reach—everyone, or nearly everyone, knows Dragon Ball—which is why it seems too soon to see Goku once again fight the God of Destruction, Golden Frieza, Hit, Zamasu, and Jiren.

DBS remained a novelty for years, even after its broadcast ended in 2018, thanks to films such as “Dragon Ball Super: Broly” (2018) and “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” (2022). People have not forgotten the story that follows Dragon Ball Z, so I still do not think it is necessary to remake the story, change a few details, and ultimately show exactly the same thing.

I would have preferred them to focus on a remake of the original Dragon Ball—the story of young Goku searching for the Dragon Balls—rather than DBS. Many people started watching DBZ without knowing the prequel’s story beforehand, which is understandable, since it has been years since it was last broadcast on television. I think that would have been a beautiful tribute to Master Toriyama.

As a Dragon Ball fan, I watched DBS while it was airing and later watched it again when it was dubbed into Latin American Spanish. So watching the same thing for a third time does not excite me very much, but I will do it out of sheer curiosity. This new anime has an excellent opening theme called “ONOGAMI.” Ever since I heard it yesterday, I have not been able to get it out of my head.

For me, watching Dragon Ball Super from a new perspective has its advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, I see that the series does not intend to repeat the same mistakes the previous version made at the beginning. Apparently, the editing will feature an effective and concise structure focused on the action in the battles. Toei Animation is using the first version as its foundation, with a different filter and improved animation, but this season will still be an extended version of the latest Dragon Ball Z films: “Battle of the Gods” (2013) and “Resurrection ‘F’” (2015).

If you are a DBZ fan and still have faith in DBS, you can give it another chance with “Dragon Ball Super: Beerus.”

Buen post.
