FREDDY, THE ICE CREAM MAN | FICTION | (EN-ES)

I graduated from high school fifteen years ago, and I haven’t spoken the name of the person who was once my friend in ten years: I stopped feeling guilty a long time ago, so Freddy is part of the past.

He was the typical troublemaker in high school, a rebellious bully, but he was my friend; he just made bad decisions. He was a prankster, a particularly obnoxious one. He was expelled from school for going too far with that prank involving the history teacher.

Somehow, he filled the teacher’s car with raspberry ice cream. The principal showed him no mercy. No one ever saw him near the school again, and I never heard from him after that. If I had known what would happen, I wouldn’t have secretly turned him in.

Life followed its natural course; it was inevitable. I grew up, and the child I used to be faded into oblivion. But the past cannot be erased...

Until just a few days ago. I was walking through the park in the city center with my son. He’s five years old now, and we were having one of those father-son moments.

That was when we heard a catchy tune. In the distance, a large crowd surrounded a purple truck with cursive lettering that read: Ice Cream. I approached out of curiosity to buy my little boy a dessert, and when I looked through the serving window, there he was.

“Welcome. What can I get you?” a deep voice asked.

It was Freddy. He looked older, slightly overweight in the shoulders, with dark circles under his eyes, but it was definitely him.

I was so stunned that I quickly said, trying to hide my surprise:

“A raspberry ice cream, please.”

Apparently, that troublesome boy had spent all his savings on that extravagant ice cream truck. Overnight, he had become famous throughout the neighborhood for his delicious raspberry ice cream.

“Freddy?” I ventured to say his name timidly as I handed him the five-dollar bill.

“It’s me, Nick. It’s been a very long time.”

He blinked a couple of times as he took the money, as if he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.

“Oh, right. Hi. Long time no see,” he said as he handed me the dripping cone.

I tried to talk with him a little longer, to ask how life had treated him and congratulate him on his business, but he looked extremely busy. And understandably so; it isn’t easy to talk and serve customers at the same time.

I didn’t want to make him uncomfortable, so I simply wished him luck, took my son by the hand, and said goodbye, taking home a very strange feeling in my stomach.

A few days later, I found a blank white envelope with no return address slipped beneath the front door of my house.

Inside was a handwritten note that read: “I know what you did. I’ll be waiting for you tonight at midnight in the dark alley behind the old laundromat. Please come alone”

I immediately had a bad feeling and knew at once that it was from Freddy. I read the first line over and over again. I realized the truth, and once again I felt guilty. I had to face my past once and for all.

I arrived at the alley at exactly midnight, my hands buried deep in the pockets of my coat, trembling not only from the cold but also from fear of what Freddy planned to do to me.

I knew exactly why he had summoned me there. He had found out. Somehow, beyond my comprehension, he had discovered what I had done to him. After all these years, he had discovered that I was the one who had turned him in. He knew that I had caused his expulsion...

A few slow footsteps sounded behind me. Freddy’s figure emerged from the shadows. He was wearing a worn leather jacket, and his face looked very serious.

“You came,” he said in a deep voice as he confronted me, cornering me against the brick wall.

“Freddy, listen to me. I’m sorry. Please forgive me,” I stammered, terrified.

I was afraid. I thought he was going to take revenge on me. I squeezed my eyes shut, expecting the blow or the hateful scream of a man who had held a grudge for years.

But instead, I heard a deep sigh.

“Don’t mention it.”

I opened my eyes, stunned. There was no hostility; it had all been in my imagination.

“In fact, I want to thank you.”

I was completely surprised as I listened to him.

“I was headed down the wrong path. If you hadn’t turned me in, I wouldn’t have hit rock bottom like that. You stopped me just in time, before I made an irreparable mistake and became a true criminal. That was the wake-up call that forced me to turn my life around.”

I had faced my past, and my friend was back...

Me descubrió.

Really enjoyed this, @neotopher! Freddy is such a creepy, memorable character. I loved how you took a nostalgic figure and twisted it into something dark.
