When James Gunn took over as director of the new DCU, he worked directly on the production of a series that was truly out of the ordinary. Just like in “Guardians of the Galaxy,” he brought a group of unknown characters to life and made them shine with style.
Set after the events of “The Suicide Squad” (2021), which limited the use of human operatives in clandestine missions, Amanda Waller is forced to look for other alternatives. Her solution is to form Task Force M, a covert operations squad made up entirely of imprisoned monsters, mutants, and other aberrations. These strange inmates are forcibly sent on suicide missions that the government considers too dangerous.
Basically, it is an animated “Suicide Squad” series, although it does not necessarily feature all the characters seen in the films. The only familiar face is “Weasel,” who had a very small role in “The Suicide Squad” (2021). He did not do much, but he was very funny. In this series, however, we finally learn about his backstory.
Although it may not seem like it, this series was the first official production of the new DCU. Technically, “Peacemaker” would be the true first series, since it was produced by James Gunn, but its first season was made to be part of the now-canceled Snyderverse. It was only in its second season, released in 2025, that the events of the antihero’s series were reworked to become part of the new DC canon. Therefore, chronologically, "Creature Commandos" is the first production in this new universe.
I have to say that I believe the best way to adapt a fantastic superhero universe is through animation, because live action has its limitations and CGI costs.
But the appeal of these cinematic universes lies in seeing what we used to see in cartoons brought to life. So I understand that an animated series may break with that principle, but I do not think that is necessarily a bad thing. At least for me, I love it when animation is used effectively.
Although Gunn is the screenwriter, Creature Commandos was directed by Matt Peters and Sam Liu under the supervision of Yves Bigerel. The series stands out for its violence and the distinctive humor of this new DC style. Its animation is similar to, yet different from, the animated films made by DC; it is genuinely expressive and fluid.
The story carefully explores the hidden humanity and motivations behind each member of this monstrous lineup.
Each episode is designed to spotlight one of the team’s members. Despite this, the narrative never strays or loses relevance. The action coexists with quieter moments in which the artistic design of the environments and the monsters themselves truly shines.
The Bride seems to have a personality that is a little too serious for my taste. She is pragmatic and cold, but her origin story connects her to Frankenstein’s monster, the quintessential monster. So I hope we get to see them in live action someday.
The team of monsters is led by a human who is not so ordinary: Rick Flag Sr., the father of Colonel Rick Flag, the leader of Task Force X seen in the films. The character debuted in this series and later appeared in “Superman” (2025) and the second season of “Peacemaker,” portrayed by Frank Grillo. So he already has a history and development within the DCU. He is a promising man in a world of superhumans.
On the other hand, we have the sarcastic, melancholic, and radioactive Dr. Phosphorus, one of Batman’s lesser-known villains. Honestly, I think he would be one of the most demanding characters to see in live action, if that ever happened. He literally glows with X-rays to the point that only his bones are visible. That would require a huge investment in CGI, so I think we may only be able to see him in action through animation.
“Creature Commandos” is not merely an animated experiment. If “The Suicide Squad” was the miraculous cornerstone of the new DCU, this series must be a key piece of what James Gunn and Peter Safran are building.
As the first official project of the first phase, “Gods and Monsters,” the series establishes decisively that anything can happen. The shared continuity and the rules of this universe have yet to find their limits.
As viewers, we must pay attention to the details, because what happens in an animated series like this will have relevance and consequences later on. Some of these characters are confirmed to appear in future live-action projects. This squad is a vital piece of DC’s larger puzzle, unifying media and formats in a way never seen before.
For me, this series met and exceeded my expectations. It is a triumph that brings some much-needed freshness to the current landscape of comic-book adaptations.
Although it is somewhat saturated with Gunn’s humor, it is a deep story with an identity of its own. It makes you genuinely empathize with these misunderstood creatures. The animation is entertaining, and the writing never loses momentum throughout any of its seven episodes.
“Creature Commandos” is a bizarre journey that will leave you with mixed feelings and questions that will keep you intrigued. Like me, you will be eager to explore the rest of DC’s productions.

Ubicada tras los eventos de "The Suicide Squad" (2021) que limitaron el uso de operativos humanos en misiones clandestinas, Amanda Waller se ve obligada a buscar otras alternativas. "Creature Commandos" es un viaje bizarro que te dejara con sentimientos encontrados y preguntas que te dejaran intrigado. Al igual que yo, tendrá inmensas ganas de explorar el resto de producciones de DC.
