When this movie was announced, many people thought it would be a sequel to “Suicide Squad” (2016), but it wasn’t. In fact, it was more like a reboot. At the time, the Snyderverse lacked a clear narrative direction; its superhero universe made no sense and continued not to make sense as more films were released. But with the arrival of James Gunn, DC recognized this director’s vision and realized that it was exactly what they needed, and it was all thanks to this movie.
“The Suicide Squad” (2021) is an example of how to redeem a failed concept and give it a fascinating identity. James Gunn completely moved away from the style that world had established, and he did it wonderfully. His sense of humor was especially characteristic of the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, and bringing that energy to a universe known for its darkness creates quite a striking contrast.
However, the film maintains a balance between the genres it explores. James Gunn makes full use of its adult rating (R) to unleash a festival of violence, dark humor, absurd humor, and pastel colors that transformed the studio’s style.
His style features a very prominent element in the action scenes: a soundtrack perfectly suited to those frantic moments. As a director, Gunn manages to express his vision through the film’s irreverent tone while also including moments of genuine cinematic sensitivity.
Now that James Gunn is in charge of the DC Universe, this movie serves as the cornerstone on which the new DC Universe is built. What happens on the island of Corto Maltese is canon within the larger story currently in development. That is why characters such as Peacemaker have received solo series that directly stem from this film.
As for the narrative, the film takes us to the fictional island of Corto Maltese, where a disposable group of supervillains made up of lunatics and mercenaries is sent by Amanda Waller on an almost suicidal secret mission. Their objective is to infiltrate a fortress and destroy a laboratory hiding a dark secret of colossal proportions known as “Project Starfish.”
Unlike the 2016 installment, the movie makes it clear from the very first minutes that no one, no matter how famous the actor, is safe within Task Force X.
It is a team of outcasts who must work together to save their own lives and those of their loved ones. As I said in my review of “Masters of the Universe,” Idris Elba is now an established action hero. Here, he is the protagonist, playing Bloodsport, a role very similar to Will Smith’s Deadshot.
John Cena, meanwhile, steals much of the spotlight with his now-famous portrayal of Peacemaker.
Margot Robbie returns to play Harley Quinn on the big screen, and at this point, I think she may be the only person who can play the character. It is now impossible to see her without associating her with Harley, much like seeing Hugh Jackman and not thinking of Wolverine.
The real surprises in the cast are Ratcatcher 2 (Daniela Melchior) and Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian). Neither has an especially large amount of screen time, but both deliver memorable performances at various points.
And then there is the adorably grotesque King Shark, a bloodthirsty source of comic relief whom I hope to see again in future DC films or series, because I genuinely enjoyed him.
This film’s relevance within the DC cinematic universe functioned as a lifeline. It not only served as a soft reboot that cleaned up the Suicide Squad’s image after the heavily criticized 2016 version, but also laid the creative foundations for guiding the franchise’s future. I would even go so far as to say that it was a stroke of luck.
The film’s critical success directly led to the creation of the acclaimed series “Peacemaker” and, ultimately, became the major catalyst for Warner Bros. to entrust James Gunn with complete control of the new DC Universe (DCU). The studio’s future over the next few years is in his hands. His creativity and vision have already made an impact in his latest productions: “Superman”, “Creature Commandos”, “Supergirl”, “Peacemaker” and now the series “Lanterns” which is currently airing.
The DCU’s journey is only just beginning, so it will take time to establish all its foundations. Honestly, I would like to see more of the Suicide Squad.
“The Suicide Squad” is what I would call an experiment with fascinating results for the future of superhero cinema. It offers a new perspective on comic-book villains and expands the possibilities of the new DC Universe, making it feel as though anything could happen.
It is a movie that was not planned to become so important, but ultimately did. It manages to make you laugh out loud, only to move or horrify you minutes later. I consider it one of the genre’s most recent gems.

Cuando se anunció está película, muchas personas pensaban que sería una secuela de la cinta "Suicide Squad" (2016), pero no, de hecho es algo así como un "Reboot". En aquel entonces, el Snyderverse carecía de una dirección clara en su narrativa, su universo de Súper héroes no tenía sentido y seguía sin tenerlo conforme sacaban sus películas. Pero con la llegada de James Gunn, DC se dió cuenta de la visión de este director y se dieron cuenta que era lo que necesitaban, y fue gracias a esta película.

Por lo que personajes como Peacemaker, que tiene una serie en solitario parte justamente de esta cinta.
En cuanto a la narrativa, la cinta nos transporta a la ficticia isla de Corto Maltese, en donde un prescindible grupo de supervillanos compuesto por lunaticos y mercenarios es enviado por Amanda Waller en una misión secreta casi suicida. A diferencia de la entrega del 2016, la película deja en claro desde los primeros minutos que nadie, por muy famoso que sea el actor, está a salvo en la fuerza especial X.
Una formación de personajes marginados que deben hacer equipo para salvar sus propias vidas y las de sus seres queridos. Cómo dije en en la Review de "Master of the Universo" Idris Elba es actualmente consagrado como un héroe de acción, aquí es el protagonista e interpreta a Bloodsport, un papel muy similar al Deadshot de Will Smith.

El éxito crítico de esta entrega derivó directamente en la creación de la aclamada serie Peacemaker y, en última instancia, fue el gran catalizador para que Warner Bros. le confiara a James Gunn las riendas absolutas del nuevo DC Universe (DCU), por los próximos años del estudio están en sus manos. Su creatividad y visión ya han dado de que hablar en sus últimas producciones: Superman, Creatures Commandos, Supergirl, Peacemaker, y ahora con la serie "linternas" que se encuentra en emisión.
