[Movie] TOY STORY (1995) (EN-ES) | REVIEW 🎬

For some reason, I feel nostalgic after watching so many horror movies. I don’t know—perhaps it’s an attempt to comfort my inner child—but I suddenly felt the need to watch classic Pixar films. After watching "Cars" (2006) for the first time in a long while, I followed it with the first "Toy Story" film (which literally marked a before-and-after moment in the animation industry).

When “Toy Story” arrived in theaters in 1995, produced by Pixar Animation Studios and directed by John Lasseter, the film went down in history as the first fully computer-animated feature film, making it a pioneer of modern CGI. What we now consider the industry standard was, at the time, an extremely expensive experiment. Back then, Disney’s classic animated films were best known for using hand-drawn traditional animation cels; the CGI revolution enabled three-dimensionality, but the technique had not yet been fully defined or refined.

However, producing films such as “Toy Story” and “A Bug’s Life” (1998) was enough to demonstrate that the future of animation lay in pixels and polygons, proving that computer animation could work just as well as pencil and paper.

Although the digital animation of 1995 may look low-quality by today’s standards, it is a timeless work that defined entire generations.

The premise poses a very imaginative question: what exactly do toys do when humans aren’t looking? In young Andy’s room, there are many toys, and the cowboy Woody is their leader because he is Andy’s favorite toy. However, with the sudden arrival of Buzz Lightyear, a modern toy who believes he is a real space ranger, everyone’s attention shifts to him. The cowboy’s jealousy causes a series of accidents that leads them to become lost in the outside world. Woody and Buzz must therefore work together to return to Andy before he moves to a new home.

I hope I’m not the only child who ever wondered whether their toys secretly came to life. I remember that when I was five, one of the rooms in my house was filled with toys. I wasn’t a collector—I was simply given a lot of toys—and whenever I finished watching "Toy Story", I would spend my time spying on that room to confirm my suspicions. It was a fantasy, but I genuinely believed it was possible because I was a child full of imagination.

Beyond the exciting adventure of a pair of toys, "Toy Story" contains a profound message about the purpose of a sentient being’s life. In Pixar’s universe, a toy’s greatest desire is simply to be used as a toy; its existence gains meaning only through a child’s imagination and happiness. Being both the cause and the result of a child’s happiness is a vocation that requires unconditional devotion.

There is a juxtaposition between Andy, the film’s main child character, and Sid, its antagonist. While one plays with his toys carefully, the other enjoys violently destroying his. Any child can sometimes be Andy and, at other times, Sid; there is no expectation of careful treatment because toys are supposedly inanimate objects. However, by giving the toys life, the film encourages us to treat them as true friends.

For this reason, being forgotten and abandoned once it is no longer needed is a toy’s greatest fear. And that is what inevitably happens as we grow up. It is a metaphor for parenthood and selfless love: being there for someone with absolute loyalty, knowing that your role in their life is temporary but essential to their growth.

Throughout the saga, dilemmas such as children eventually losing interest in their toys will be explored, but the first installment focuses on the importance of toys to children—and vice versa.

Woody the cowboy’s personal development reflects this beautifully. At first, he is a charismatic but insecure leader, willing to get rid of Buzz simply to maintain his privileged status. Through spending time with him, however, Woody opens up emotionally. He comes to understand that Andy’s love is not a limited resource, just as no toy is truly limited edition.

On the other hand, we have Buzz Lightyear, the franchise’s favorite toy. He is introduced as a toy who does not know that he is a toy until he is forced to accept the truth. Discovering that he is not a space ranger causes his identity to fall apart, and after experiencing an existential crisis, he accepts that he is loved despite being a toy.

Woody and Buzz forge an iconic friendship by realizing that what matters is not who the favorite is, but the common goal they share: making the child who trusts them happy.

Their entire character arc is perfectly summarized by the memorable song composed by Randy Newman, their signature theme: “You’ve Got a Friend in Me.” From the moment you hear it for the first time in the opening scene, the melody stays in your memory for life. The lyrics take on an even more emotional meaning in the franchise’s third installment.

“Toy Story” is part of many people’s childhoods. Woody and Buzz were the symbolic toys of countless children—and they still are, thanks to the new films. Watching this adventure again is a journey back to childhood, to a time when imagination had no limits and we believed our own toys came to life as soon as we closed the bedroom door.

You've Got a Friend in Me".

  • That moment when Buzz finally realizes he can't actually fly got me 😂 The way he keeps trying then crashes down the stairs is still hilarious.
