I tell you, with all my heart, that there are plants that take a piece of you with them when they go, and there are also people who give you that piece back with a gesture that seems small but is enormous.
Two months ago, my silver Astrophytum decided its cycle was complete. I first noticed a subtle wrinkling, then a softness that promised nothing good. I watered less, moved it to another spot, talked to it, but it was in vain. One morning, when I touched it, it gave way like a sigh, and I was left with my hand in the air, holding nothing.

That plant was one of my favorites, not because of its rarity but because it accompanied me through my move, through my beginner's doubts, through those sunny afternoons when I would gaze at it. It was small, with barely five well-defined ribs, that slow rhythm of cacti that do everything at a leisurely pace. And I, fool that I am, cried as if I had lost a friend.
I didn't tell everyone. Who understands that? But I did tell a botanist friend, and today he left a gift at my neighbor's doorstep. When I arrived from the hospital, tired after a long consultation, she told me someone had left a plant as a present.

When I saw it, my heart stopped for two seconds. It was an Astrophytum, yes, but not just any one. It was much larger than the one I had lost. Greyish green, with that layer of farina that makes them look like velvet, and ribs so perfect they seemed drawn with a compass. A specimen that makes you exhale slowly, like when you see something too beautiful and you don't want to break the spell.
Now I have it here among my other cacti, waiting for a new pot I will buy for it. Next to it, a mammillaria that has bloomed like crazy this year. But it stands out. It is as if it knows it comes with a mission: to fill the gap left by the other one, but without trying to replace it.

I am already thinking about its final pot. The tin it came in is functional, but it deserves something more. I have been thinking about unglazed clay pots. I want its roots to have space, for it to grow slowly but happily, when I put a layer of white gravel on top to contrast with that greyish green. Maybe I will find it a spot where it gets morning sun, but not the two o'clock sun, which is already too harsh.

In the meantime, I leave it in its tin and glance at it sideways while I write, and I do not know if it is ridiculous to say this, but it fills my soul. Today I have a silver Astrophytum again, and although I will never forget the other one, this one already has a piece of my heart. I will name it when I transplant it, but that will be for another post.
