Imagine what school would look like if phones never existed. 🤔🤔 Nothing like a smartphone to assist in browsing or even take pictures, creating lovely memories, not even the WhatsApp groups created by many students these days to aid in disseminating vital info, just nothing for communication except physical.
Now, it may sound strange to our hearing because we, the people of this era, aren't used to such a life. We are privileged to have access to this technology that makes our lives easier and more meaningful, but then, people before us also did schooling without phones, so yeah, it's possible, but I'm glad I wasn't born back then. 😊 No need to pretend because, oops, how did they do it? ☺️
Well, somehow they survived it; they still made friends, wrote their notes, and did their hectic research by going miles away in search of a good library. Oh boy, it's well with them, lol.
So, without further ado, this is what I think school would really look like without phones.
Firstly, we will start attending lectures more without phone distractions even while the lecture is going on. Nothing much will drag the attention of the students, unlike what we have it today. Go to the lecture room and see that 50% of students are on TikTok, Instagram, etc., whereas lectures are on... what a big distraction.
Secondly, maybe we will have time to visit one another to know how our friends and loved ones are doing since we can't video call or chat with them like we do now. That one-on-one conversation at times used to be heavenly...lol, but phones stole that opportunity away a long time ago.
Again, I also think that research will be quite different and harder. With our phones, we just need a click to research things online, and within seconds, we are good to go. But then, I am imagining how students will depend on libraries and textbooks for their research. This will consume a lot of time before finally getting results, but maybe it can also teach students patience along the line while on their research.
However, I won't imagine only the good side of school without a phone. To be honest, it won't be anything easier; technology is beneficial till tomorrow. Learning is easier with phones. Even here in primary school, my kids attend online classes whenever they have any reason not to be in school, and that's really a plus. Imagine having an emergency in school without a phone? "Phone is never our problem," people say; it's just the way we use it.
At the end of the day, life is a choice, but honestly, I don't think I can manage going back to school without a phone. 😉
